4.5 stars. The plot is steady with a very melancholic narrator. The premise is subtle and made it relaxing to read. I appreciate a book about feeling foreign among your own family.

3.5 stars. Initially found it cliché, but then I tried to dismiss the mentality that women writing about heartbreak has to be “bad” or “corny.” I appreciated the brief immersion into the author’s mind, and that she advocates for giving yourself over to spontaneity and simplicity.
“The best thing I can ever do for myself is take my time.” was my favorite line but I didn’t like the font the entire book is written in. SORRY.

This book is a little uncomfortable but in a way that’s important. It heavily emphasizes the paradoxical nature of mental illness. The narrator is a neurotic narcissist who deeply despises himself.
