The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson

As a friend of mine suggested the Mistborn series, I picked it up a few days back. I enjoyed book 1, The Final empire and hoped Vin's journey gets better as the story progresses but little did I know that I was in for a rather dull experience. The last 100 or so pages are a solid 5 stars but the book overall (for me) is quite boring and uneventful. I actually fail to understand why is this book rated so high (people have different opinions, don't hold it against me).
It was supposed to be an adult fantasy but the narrative falls short considering even YA fantasies get raw a few times during the narration which this series fails to achieve.

1. I felt Sanderson's writing very repeatative. I mean how many times does he need to clarify that Vin trusts the mists? Or it swirls around the Mistborn?

2. The story promises to go somewhere which practically it doesn't. The story goes nowhere. There is not even a single moment in the whole story that makes you say "This is it".

3. "Well of Ascension" the name should have been changed to "A series of uneventful meetings for 500 pages and more meetings". I mean seriously? Sanderson never did so many meetings himself as many he has described in the book.

4. Vin has gone from an earth shattering wizard to let's say a mature Pokemon. Most of the story she spends her time brooding over the fact that Elend has changed. I mean it covers so much of the story that you can count rest of the pages on your fingers. It gets boring pretty fast. It feels a teen highschool drama for crying out loud. Much of the time Vin is shown weeping for the love of her life which she is not sure if it actually is the love of her life. So much weeping from Vin's side.

5. Elend's character development is solid 5 stars and the only interesting thing in the whole book. How he ascended from a boy to a full grown king is quite intriguing.

6. In every other page Vin and Elend are shown kissing each other out of affection. It's okay to kiss someone, It builds a strong relationship between the characters. But the story suffers from "Overkissing".

7. Sanderson seemed really fixated on proving to the audience that Elend is a better choice for a king than Kelsier. It felt imposing from time to time and Vin's perspective thrown in the middle made it quite annoying.

8. Have I metioned the book is repeatative in narration?

9. The fact that infuriates me most is that Kelsier's crew has been shown worthless without Vin. I mean they were THE GO-TO GUYS. They did the impossible tasks. They were KELSIER'S CREW!! Here they are some people who love to rely on Vin to kill mosquitoes.

I have other points in mind...but I think you get my point.
It is a Waste of Time.

My first thriller in a long time. And I can undoubtedly say that Rachel Caine delivered. Great plot, very good pacing, tense atmosphere and a psycho villain. In every way Rachel Caine has hit the ball out of the park.

It perfectly shows the horror that lurks in the society, among us, among common people. Pretty much shows the reality how we are, how little our existence means. In a moment you are someone but just like that you cease to exist and no one actually misses you unless your body resurfaces.

The protagonist is really badass. Not like super smart, well privileged women who also happens to be an ex spy with combat experience, no. She is just a woman who has lived with the horror for years, put her kids in harms way and made it her sole responsibility to keep her children safe.

The novel is filled with twists and set in tense, spine chilling and terrifying atmosphere. The more you read, more the tension grows on you. What can I say? It's a fine piece of work.

There is nothing soothing in this book. Brilliant.
