The author states multiple times that she is not attempting to pull back from or sugarcoat the material, but it still felt like that's what she was doing. I don't know if some of it is the publisher/editor asking her to write in caveats, but it would be nice to read a book where the assumption going in is that we are all adults here, and we are reading a book on using blood and animal curios because we are willing to use blood and animal curios in our practices. I did really like the dark moon quarter calls in the beginning of the book, I thought they had really good visualization cues. Liked the curse tablet spell and the blood and corn curse. You can call me an old lady if you want to but I have read plenty of death spells in my life and we can just say they are spells for someone's death and not qualify that by saying it's to bring about the death of a situation because we are all babies who need coddling. Not every book is a book for beginners and that's okay.

I got this so i could learn about some new authors and titles but she really hyped up A Head Full of Ghosts and it was so, so bad, so now I'm a little wary of these other recommendations

Overhyped. Kept reading in hopes it would get better. I should have DNF'd. I have already read We Have Always Lived in the Castle so this just felt derivative, annoying, and boring, with basically the same ending??

I had a hard time understanding what was happening throughout this collection because the art is lacking. The stories themselves are mostly very good! There are times within the story where there is supposed to be some kind of reveal - kind of like a page turn in a Junji Ito manga where you're seeing something shocking and/or gross - but either Franklin cannot render the scene in a way that is shocking or gross or she simply does not. I can't tell from this collection if it's a skill issue or just laziness. I think this book would be really amazing with a good artist - Franklin is losing the "pop" of the story because the reader has to turn the page back and re-examine panels just to follow what's going on. The stories themselves are good but they get lost somewhat with the vague art.

This was fun and terrific! The art is so gorgeous and that's what made me want to pick it up. I loved the stories! I would give this five stars but I'm knocking a bit off for the lettering choice - the cursive font that was used for Alfred's narration is not super clear. Readable, but not the best choice; the other lettering and sound effects are great, though.

I think this was a fun good time! These reviews are crazy though, do y'all actually think this eight year old kid is going to somehow be involved in this plot other than going to school and having a babysitter??? Lmao? I would also say that I don't think that this novel is very graphic and most of the things reviewers have added content warnings for are pretty minor. There is not a graphic miscarriage in this book, it is a passing mention! Anyway I finished this in one sitting and had a blast. It was fun. I loved the little twists and turns and appreciated the ending. Good times!
