This book is undeniably well-written. For the most part I can completely understand why it is such a titan in the science fiction genre. It is engrossing, highly detailed, and incredibly dense with some phenomenal world building. It feels epic.

And yet the last 100 pages or so were immensely unsatisfying. Most of that felt somewhat lazy, or perhaps just rushed. What it was building towards never really happened, and the final climax made no real sense, emotionally.

Plot or Character Driven: A mix

I enjoyed this book well enough, but reading it after finishing Vicious I was honestly a bit let down. Still good, but didn’t live up to the expectations I had had

This book is phenomenal! One of the best written and most inventive fantasy books I’ve read in a while. So. Good.

Disclaimer: my rating and review might change based on the sequels and how they address certain things I disliked in this one.

I really struggled whether to give this 3 or 4 stars. It’s technically very well written, aside from one or two moments that struggled with clarity. So, my issues aren’t with the writing itself.

My biggest gripe with The City of Brass was the love triangle involving Nahri, Dara, and Ali. Simply put, I felt the romance between any/all of them was incredibly forced and didn’t make a whole lot of sense. I think the narrative could have been tighter and the character motivations clearer/more sensible without the romance. There was plenty of mystery, magic, political squabbles, action, etc. that were infinitely more interesting than the love stories, that the love triangle itself generally felt like it was almost derailing the rest of the narrative. Or, if not derailing, at the very least getting in the way. There was plenty to like, and so much intrigue, that I mostly didn’t see the point of forcing a love triangle as well, and it honestly pulled me out of the world regularly.

That said, I loved basically everything else: the magic, the world, the politics and scheming, and the general mythos being created, so I will definitely be continuing with the series.
