I wanted to give this 5 stars because I enjoyed the hell out of it, but the obvious therapy that Nora needed never came and was barely mentioned at the end as a gloss over as if to tell the reader, "Oh hey, I totally know that my character has PTSD, look, I've taken care of it." Mm, agree to disagree, Emily. Other than that, this was a joy to read. The relationship between Libby and Nora as sisters was seriously the icing on the cake.

When they say, "Write what you know", McQueen (formerly known as Kenyon) really took that to heart. Her books have always been heavy in the betrayal and being ostracized for being "different", but MAN, was the whole betrayal stuff really heavy in this. Her trauma was dripping all over this book. That said, it wasn't awful. The characters were a bit 2 dimensional for me, but I enjoyed them well enough. It was certainly better than her Dragon trilogy, and as the first book I've read of hers in years  it could have been worse. I also remembered about 3 of the characters, but that's on me for trying to dive back in after all this time. I'm not even sure if it moved the plot along, and there's still the fact that her Nick series (RIP) made a mess of the timeline (which was already a shitshow). Still the same ending with marriage and kids, but I kind of looked it over since it was set in the middle ages. All in all, I wasn't mad so it was an improvement for me.

I had high hopes, but this was another instance where a non fat author makes a fat character nothing more than her weight and her hang ups. Also, the "conflict" was so contrived and STUPID, I wanted Frankie to be "Nah, I ain't got time to be your emotional punching bag."
