The Haar by David Sodergren
5.0
Page turning, horror romance!
This was my first time reading anything from David Sodergren, and he definitely didn't disappoint. I've been obsessed with horror since I was a child, and this novel gave me those nostalgic 80's B horror movie vibes. I thought the characters were brilliant, the plot was quirky and unique, and the editing was on point! I highly recommend grabbing this book!

The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker
5.0
Title: The Hellbound Heart (Hellraiser, #1)
Author: Clive Barker
Publisher: HarperCollins e-books
Paperback/Hardback/eBook: Kindle eBook
Fiction/Non-Fiction: Fiction
Genre: Horror
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Frank opens a creepy puzzle box, meets some creepy beings, then disappears.
Hands down one of my favorite Clive Barker stories. This book was also turned into a movie, of which the main protagonist is Pinhead (my favorite monster). If you've seen the movie and not read the book, I highly recommend picking it up. Definitely a must read!

The Ninth Circle by Luke Walker
2.0
Title: The Ninth Circle: A Horror Novel
Author: Luke Walker
Publisher: Wicked House Publishing
Paperback/Hardback/eBook: eBook (Kindle)
Fiction/Non-Fiction: Fiction
Genre: Horror
Rating: ⭐⭐
Trigger Warnings:
Sexual Violence/Rape
Nuclear Weapons
Pandemic Talk
Thank you so much to Wicked House Publishing for providing me with this ARC via NetGalley in return for my honest review.
I was drawn to this book initially by the description, and let's be honest - the cover is pretty rad as well. I love a good apocalypse/rapture/end times story. I was also pleasantly surprised to find the epigraph of the novel is a passage from Dante's Inferno, which furthered my assumption that the book was going to be some sort of Hellscape filled with demons and fire.
The concept of the book is actually really cool. The first chapter was written very well and really grabbed my attention, but as I got further into the book I just felt like I was reading a first draft. There was little to no character development (that includes the demons) which left me feeling like there was no protagonist of the story. Most interactions between characters are spent asking each other what they did before the apocalypse, or yelling at each other and apologizing immediately. The writing was extremely redundant, causing the storyline to feel stagnant. As much as I love gore, I felt like the author put way too much into the book without properly building up to the events.
I really wanted to like this book, but it was extremely hard for me to read.

Paperback/Hardback/eBook: Kindle ARC eBook
Fiction/Non-Fiction: Fiction
Genre: Horror/Cosmic Horror/Possession Horror
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you so much to DarkLit Press for offering this ARC via NetGalley in return for my honest opinion.
Trigger Warnings:
Cults
Sexual Acts
Satanic Symbology
Possession
Gore
This is my first Steve Stred/DarkLit Press read and I'm appalled at myself for only just discovering both!
I'm a huge fan of Possession Horror so I was immediately attracted to this book after reading the description. Not much scares me in the way of Horror anymore, but this novel definitely spooked me. Between the pentagrams on the pages and the descriptive imagery of Beasts far too vast for us to comprehend, Steve Stred's writing has the uncanny ability to make you feel a sense of dread. I felt like I needed to be looking over my shoulder to make sure nothing was in the room with me. I devoured this book in a day, absolutely fantastic read!
If you love Possession Horror, I highly recommend reading this gem. I loved this novel so much that I even pre-ordered myself a copy.
