Knock Knock, Open Wide by Neil Sharpson
4.0
Title: Knock Knock, Open Wide
Author: Neil Sharpson
Publisher: Tor Nightfire
Paperback/Hardback: Hardback
Fiction/Non-Fiction: Fiction
Genre: Horror/Folk horror
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Trigger Warnings:
Gore
Lewd Acts
Religious Aspects
Neil Sharpson pulls inspiration from Irish Folklore, easily melding and intertwining his then/now chapter style in a way that is easily followed. I connected to the main characters Betty and Ashling right away and was rooting for them the entire time. If you're looking for a book with monsters, there are plenty enclosed within these pages (but I don't want to spoil the surprise). I will tell you though, don't be naughty around a certain ancient box, or the things inside will come looking for you. They will make you forget yourself, to become yourself. If you love Folk Horror, definitely grab yourself a copy of this book.

I had high hopes for this book, but the back and forth timeline is so confusing! I finally had to give up reading this book 33% in.

Thank you to Wicked House Publishing for this ARC in return for my honest review.
This book was marketed as horror, but it's more of a coming of age/paranormal ghost story type of book. I really did enjoy the author's writing style, however, coming of age stories aren't really my favorite thing. I've abandoned the book about halfway through because there is little to no horror involved, and the book is just too slow for me.
The story is written so that an elderly man is telling a story about his youth - but most of the chapters are children from his stories interacting. It seems that there are a lot of misspellings/grammar issues, but that is just the author trying to write the story in slang. I didn't find it hard to read, but I could see how it would bother some.
I am open to reading more from this author in the future as I found his writing style very intriguing and nostalgic.

Paperback/Hardback: ARC Kindle eBook

Genre: Horror/Gothic Horror
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you so much to DarkLit Press for offering this ARC via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This was such a beautifully written Gothic Horror novel with a clever, smoking gun of a plot twist. The author puts a new spin on an age old myth, breathing new life into one of the most ancient of beings. It took me a couple chapters to get into the book, but once I got hooked I read it in one sitting! I absolutely love the cover art of the book as well.
I found the gore/horror parts of the book to be mild, so I definitely feel comfortable recommending it to those that are a bit more leery of gore.
This was overall a great read and I highly recommend picking up a copy! Pub Date Jul 19 2024

Thank you so much to DarkLit Press for providing this ARC ebook via NetGalley in return for my honest opinion.
This was such a great short horror story book! There are 13 chapters, each chapter a different short story. I especially loved the skull emblems at the beginning of each chapter. You'll find zombies, cosmic gods, and even aliens in these stories. The author's writing was intriguing and the stories were very unique. I highly recommend this book!

Maeve Fly by CJ Leede

A book after my own demented heart <3 Definitely for those that have a tolerance for nauseatingly descriptive gore. I couldn't put this book down, and since I've finished it - it's been living rent free in my head, constantly replaying. There's something for every horror fan in this book: eggs, cactus, cursed dolls and lots of BLOOD.
I originally borrowed this book from the library, but ended up loving it so much that I bought myself a copy. I'll be pre-ordering CJ Leede's next book because I loved her writing so much.

This was an excellent short story audio book, I absolutely loved it. The narrator kept me interested and didn't have a boring or monotonous voice. Fun, quick listen - I definitely recommend!

This book follows the adventures of two witchy sisters, Leona and Jewel, who live in a small Appalachian town. When a girl is murdered, the two sisters set out to find the culprit and solve the mystery. This book is dialogue heavy, with a Southern accent undertone. I did manage to make it 50% in because the characters are pretty likable and the magic descriptions were pretty great. Sadly I started noticing some redundant sentences and noticed myself skimming, so I decided to abandon the book. It just didn't keep my attention.
This would probably be a good book for readers that love Witchy, Southern mystery themes. Overall, the author's writing is readable and the characters likable, I just couldn't stay interested in the plot.

Billy Silver by Daniel J. Volpe
4.0
This was my first Daniel J. Volpe read, recommended to me by one of my Instagram followers. I have to say that I had such an indifferent feeling about this book after finishing it, which is weird because I absolutely devoured this novel in one day. Billy Silver is the stereotypical heroine addict and just a horrible human being. There wasn't much to like about him or his girlfriend, but Volpe's writing kept me reading because the story had me hooked. This is an extreme horror novel, so I don't recommend this to someone that is new the genre. If you're desensitized to gore, then you're probably good to go. I you are a seasoned horror reader, this read/author is definitely worth checking out!
Gone to See the River Man by Kristopher Triana

Title: Gone to See the River Man
Author: Kristopher Triana
Publisher: Bad Dream Books
Edition: Kindle eBook
Fiction/Non-Fiction: Fiction
Genre: Horror/Cosmic Horror
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This book takes you on a crazy ride! I thought I was reading a mild mannered Folk Horror novel - but it quickly escalated into a Cosmic Horror situation. There's no denying that this novel is dark, demented and triggering. You're going to encounter incest, rape and plenty of gore - so please prepare yourself when opting to read this novel.
With all that being said, I enjoyed this book so much! Kristopher Triana is an excellent writer. I found the imagery in this book to be really intriguing. Although I didn't necessarily love or connect with the characters - I was still able to enjoy the story because it was so interesting. I definitely recommend giving this book a read if you are looking for something that pushes the limits.
