"Consider this your goddamn trigger warning." - Dead Inside
This is the MOST fucked up book I've ever read. I feel like I should give it a one star for how depraved it is, but I gave it a five star because I couldn't put this down. Chandler Morrison is a very talented writer and I'll be reading ALL his books now. This story is basically two star crossed lovers with taboo proclivities orbiting around each other, until something so vile happens that you'll be yelling "WTF DID I JUST READ?!"
Following suit of a few other reviews I read about this book - I'm going to just call myself a desensitized POS too. This book absolutely proved to me that not much bothers me or surprises me anymore.
Honestly, if you're NORMAL and not a desensitized POS like myself, don't read this book. You will want to vomit, take a bath in bleach and then cut part of your brain out so that you don't have to remember any details about this book.
If you like Extreme Horror/Splatterpunk books - this is a must read.
A recently married couple takes a wrong turn on their honeymoon road trip, ending up in a small town with hidden secrets. This was a quick, cozy, paranormal thriller/ghost story with likable characters and nostalgic 90s vibe. The writing and character development was great - but unfortunately I just didn't love this book. If you enjoy cozy mysteries/ghost stories this book would be right up your alley though.
This was my first Grady Hendrix read, and omg this book was such a wild ride! I didn't read too much of the synopsis before digging in, but as soon as I got reading I was hooked. I really identified and connected with the brother/sister handling the death/probate of their late parents (as I just handled my father's probate case - along with my little brother). This book actually brought me to tears a couple times because Grady Hendrix describes the mental anguish and familial turmoil that happens when family members pass away so well. It felt like I was reliving my experience to the T. The storyline is so clever and unique, and honestly, fuck puppets! I absolutely adore this book and can't recommend it enough! Definite must read if you get a chance!
The cover of this book caught my attention initially, then after reading the synopsis I decided to borrow a copy and check it out. This is a creature horror book, and right off the bat in the first chapter we get to witness said creature hanging out on top of a school roof. It was written so well, and it grabbed my attention - but sadly after the first chapter the characters do no more than play hide and seek inside the house they're hiding out in. I tried really hard to make it through this book, but I just couldn't. I was skimming after 20% just to see if the story would pick up. The concept was really cool, it just wasn't executed the best. I had to DNF this.
Such a super fun, Sapphic horror novel! . I usually don't enjoy 'coming of age' novels, but the characters were written with more mature attitudes so I was able to get interested in this book quite quickly. The storyline was very unique and I loved the way it flowed. I definitely recommend reading this book if you get a chance.
