Ghost Virus by Graham Masterton
3.0
I'd never read anything by Graham Masterton but this first book in the Patel & Pardoe series intrigued me. The first couple of chapters really hooked me, and I must say that there is a fair amount of gore in this book as well. It has a sort of 'Hot Fuzz', dark comedy feel to it. Unfortunately, after a few chapters I lost interest in the book because it seemed like some of the chapters were over written and delayed in getting to the point. What I mean by that is, I think the book could of been more effective/enjoyable if it had some of the benign descriptive paragraphs taken out. This book is more of a paranormal mystery/thriller as opposed to a horror novel. If you enjoy impossible crime novels this would be a great book for you!
Nestlings by Nat Cassidy

All I can say is WOW, Nat Cassidy is such a talented writer! This is my first read from him and I'm just blown away. I've never read a story quite like this. In essence this is a vampire story, however, Nat Cassidy has managed to completely rework the lore and defining characteristics that constitute being a vampire into something completely new and refreshing. I couldn't put this book down!
The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward
4.0
This was a great read! It's a Psychological horror with multiple view points, which can be confusing sometimes if you're not prepared for that layout. But once you get in to the flow of the story, it's pretty easy to read. Catriona Ward does an excellent job of hooking you right off the bat - it caused me to constantly question just wtf was going on (in a good way). Then, just when I think I've figured it out - NOPE! Over and over again! Haha! The writing in this novel is so descriptive, it really gets into your bones and causes an uncomfortable feeling. Definitely recommend reading this - just prepare for a continuous mind fuck.

I was recommended this book based on my love of possession horror - but I had to DNF this book about 20% in.
.
The editing in this book is so AWFUL. There are so many auto-correct/spell check errors that make sentences make no sense at all. Example, a limousine was being called a Saloon. Now, I did my due diligence and researched this particular use of the word and I couldn't find any use of Saloon in relation to a car/limo in any different culture, country or language.
.
Secondly, there are major plot continuity issues I just couldn't get past. I can overlook small errors or discrepancies - but these were bad enough and close enough together in the story that it just made my brain hurt.
.
The characters in the book are lack luster and their dialogue is just cheesy. There is no real substance behind them or what they say.
.
Due to the things mentioned above, this novel just read like a rushed/unfinished novel. Do not recommend.

Rabbit Hunt by Wrath James White

I saw this book being hyped up around the extreme horror community social media, and I had some Kindle Rewards points so I snatched up a copy. The characters are really enjoyable right off the bat - but we quickly find out that they have evil intentions.
.
This book is very much about the animosity between Whites and Blacks, and just how wrong that can go deep in the woods and away from civilization. The author does a really good job of adding in bits of teaching information about derogatory terms that should never be used to describe Black men, and includes references to a book that our main characters are using for guidance. As a white woman reading this, it was uncomfortable at times - but ultimately I appreciate the fact that I learned something from this book as well.
.
The concept of this book is really cool, and I did keep reading it and made it to the end - however, there were a lot of editing issues and plot continuity issues. I can deal with a couple of mistakes here and there, but it seemed like past the 40% point the book just started feeling rushed and not edited at all. There were things that just didn't make sense, and characters added that just didn't need to be there.
.
Now, if you can look past editing issues/plot issues - the extreme horror parts of this book are pretty raunchy and gory. I wouldn't say vomit inducing, but very shocking. I just personally prefer a more polished edit - as opposed to basing a book solely on how nasty the gore is.
.
Horror is always subjective, and just because I didn't think this book was worth the hype - doesn't mean you won't. I'll leave you with a quote from the epigraph of the book - “Like gluttony or drunkenness, hatred seems an agreeable vice when you practice it yourself, but disgusting when observed in others.”

In the Tall Grass by Stephen King

I could not put this book down, it hooked me from the beginning. There's not much in the horror genre that ever really upsets me or bothers me anymore, but the violence in this book is GRAPHIC. I want to include a content warning here because it may be too much for some people - there is violence against a pregnant woman that does not end well. King and Hill expertly make you bond and connect with the brother/sister duo in this tale, then they proceed to take you on a soul wrecking adventure. Absolute must read!
Come Closer by Sara Gran

I'm not sure if all the hype surrounding this book got the best of me, or I'm just missing the 'scared shitless of Demonic Possession' gene - but this book was not scary at all. Possession horror is hands down my favorite horror genre (in movies and books alike). Possession is also one of my professional curiosities - I've probably read, seen, heard and studied so many cases of it that maybe I've just desensitized myself? The writing in this book was good, but I didn't find myself longing to get done doing my adulting to hurry back to read more of the book. In fact, it took me quite a while to get invested in reading it. I didn't find the characters particularly intriguing either - none of them were that interesting (including the demon). For the lack of a better sentiment, I just felt MEH at the end.
.
I do think that this would be a good starting book for those interested in reading possession horror as it's a more subtle take on possession and it's progression. I don't think it's overly gruesome/frightening either - so I think new horror readers could absolutely make it through the book without DNFing it due to being too scared.
