Always grateful for Kevin Wilson who writes stories about the power of art and outsiderdom in a way that always make me feel so seen and heard.

It doesn’t hurt that this story goes down as smooth as a glass of ice cold water on a hot day.

What did hurt (but in a good way) was his meditation on nostalgia, childhood, friendships, the things/people that imprint on us and make it so we are never the same again. The moments that make us, the selves we leave behind, and the sense of loss and love we can feel for it all (at the very same time).

3 ⭐️ as a YA (too juvenile)
4⭐️ as MG (maybe higher if I was younger)

Really cute story but I thought this was YA, which can have quite mature stories and this one really veers much more Middle Grade

There’s no time to waste on a book you aren’t enjoying. I kept trying to force myself to like this one. The premise seemed so good, but sadly I was bored pretty much immediately. Everything felt like it was trying too hard, the writing, the characters, the clever tie ins to Baba Yaga lore.

4.5 ⭐️- A great book to start the new year off. Inspiring and hopeful with all of TJR trademark character development and fun interludes.

CW: Major character death which broke me 😭

2.75 ⭐️- too bad because I enjoyed the first one. Not sure if this was not the right time for me to read this or what, but it felt like Blake over complicated everything in this book…. And for what? I could not stay interested… and all the characters except Parisa started to grate on me with their relentless derision and snide commentary
