This may be the first book in the series since Memories of Ice that felt like I read it in no time at all. I chipped away at The Bonehunters at a chapter or two a night and it was so fun being back in this world.
I started this book back in 2021, when I read 150 pages and then burned out after reading books 1-5 back to back then starting this one. So, when I started it in May, I went back and started again and I'm looking forward to continuing the series.
The Bonehunters brought back some familiar characters and while the whole book felt very questy, plans are taking shape and this was actually a good place to get back into the series after so long away from it. Despite the Malazan books being 'difficult to follow', I found this book pretty easy to follow (for the most part). I loved being back with my favourite characters and some of the funnier characters really do make this miserable story a little more bearable.

Very maths-centric, something that is just a random but endearing feature in the Reacher books. Not bad, just not for me.
Such an emotional read. I would perish if my pet went missing for this long.
Nothing mind-blowing but it was a fun read. Quick and didn't require any brain power. Jordan being older for her age and Pike being quite sulky for his age was a slightly annoying dynamic. Cole was obviously there just to be the ex but he was really just a bit of a tool. The happily ever after with marriage and kids was pretty meh but I liked the writing.
Interesting read. Not too gratuitous with the descriptions of the murders and gave the reader a feel for Kemper's cool demeanour. The first half of the book was clear and informative but the last half (between the 55-75% mark) felt like the first half of the book but told by Kemper after his surrender. It was interesting to read about the FBI interviewing him (as they did in Mindhunter). I didn't expect that to be in here.
A good premise poorly executed.
It tries to tell the story of the victims and then the victims are given a paragraph at the end while fleshing out the final hours of their murderer, Ansel, with what could be justifications for his actions (abandonment).
Combin flat characters the author's writing style, and you get a pretty bland story that could have been really compelling.
