this book is one of a kind.
thrown into a foreign world without much of an explanation, but held on. i’m so glad i did.
the last two thirds of the book i could not put it down. murder mystery in a haunted palace, in space, with modern humor. found myself snickering to myself several times. highly recommend hanging in there for the first third of the book, it’s setting up for a hell of a ride.

This is my first Emily Henry book and I am impressed.

Romance is not my usual genre, but this outdid my expectations. This is not only a story of romance, but a story of heartbreak, loss of sense of self, the fallout of what happens when you build your entire life around your partners. An exploration of friendship with different age ranges. Parental/Familial relationships, and finding fulfillment.

Emily Henry’s writing makes you feel as though these characters are your friends you’re catching up with. It’s addictive and heartwarming. I can’t wait to read her other books.

I could not put this down. I wanted to read it in one sitting, and had to actively stop myself from doing so knowing it would give me nightmares if I did. It’s haunting. Addictive. I highly recommend, but not for the faint of heart.

This is the worst book i’ve read. I don’t even want to think about it to give it a review.

A white savior talking about slavery. Extremely misogynistic.
Extremely homophobic as well. Just sickening.

The author only writes women to serve men. Unable to describe women other than mentioning their physical beauty. Only views women as tools and objects to demonstrate men’s power. Through rape, control, violence, murder. The main character befriends rapists and empathizes with them multiple times. Truly disgusting and i’m appalled this isn’t talked about enough while reading others reviews.

Even besides the sickening misogyny and homophobia, the writing is awful. It’s super inconsistent, originally introducing Darrow as someone with a huge risk tolerance to earn for his family, then a chapter later *spoiler alert*
doesn’t react to his family being hung right in front of him. he would die in the mines if it meant winning the laurel, but won’t speak up for himself or his wife while they are being beaten and hung.
This is only one major example of the inconsistency this writing has.

The whole book is written from the perspective of telling and not showing. Such a drag to read.

Darrow is the most insufferable main character i’ve ever had to read about and i’m glad I don’t have to be in his head a second longer.

I am super confused, appalled, and upset this book has good reviews. But it makes more sense knowing it’s a white, male author creating a world to serve his white savior complex, assuming his audience is the same.

do better :)

This is my first adult sci-fi read. It got very scientific at times, but the author is really good about explaining things and not relying on outside knowledge. It made it digestible, my eyes glazed over less than I was expecting.
The pacing kept me engaged. It seemed well thought out, though i’m not super scientific so I wouldn’t be able to dispute anything if there were any hiccups.
The addition of Rocky was really sweet. I wasn’t expecting this to be about the discovery of alien life, and it made the whole book for me

However, this seems to be a story of another straight white man showing off scientific theories which isn’t really my cup of tea.
If you enjoy straight white men yapping without any character development, showing off their big brain ideas, you’ll enjoy this one.
