Fantastic scares and atmosphere. The beginning third of the book is a solid five stars… 3.5 for the rest. This story deserves a developmental edit with a heavy hand to get it tighter, more cohesive. I’ve read since that it’s author adapted it from short stories published on a popular spooky subreddit. And you can feel that. The momentum moves up and down… steam runs out midway and sort of trails from one small peak to another. Almost like it’s meandering. Potential plot threads that are tantalising in opportunity disappear, despite multiple hints. I feel like if it was chopped a bit, reworked in sections it could be a flowing, terrifying, cohesive story. Anyway, despite that this story still scared me shitless and I loved the thought that went into the backstory of the monster and its intentions.

Thoroughly hooked from beginning to end. I read Malfi’s Bone White a couple years ago and found it fantastic, and so now reading this tidy little tale has solidified for me the imperative to explore and read Malfi’s entire catalogue.

This story was inventive and interesting and while the ending wasn’t harrowing like so much of horror is, I found that to be refreshing in its own right.

I am incredibly sad to say goodbye to this series. Ingrid made for a wonderful protagonist—thoughtful, feisty, clever. The author has a real knack for writing a child’s perspective while not making it grating or tiresome, and he never infantilises her, but on the same hand doesn’t make her seem like an adult in a child’s body. Writing children is hard and he does it so well. Larger threads of plot occur around Ingrid which you as a reader, with your own adult perspective and experiences, can quickly ascertain but Ingrid is still too young to grasp. The mysteries were tight and interesting. Just wonderful. I sincerely wish there were more! I could read many more of this series. Such a shame.

Definitely my least favourite out of all the books I've read from this author. The layout of the castle was hard to picture and the plot somehow just as incomprehensible. I figured out the twist almost immediately, which is perfectly fine for a YA pulp novel and actually it meant I was hanging on waiting for the twist the whole way through the book, so it kept the momentum of the read going for me.
