I've got to start off with talking about the format. I loved the oral interview format. I haven't seen anything like it before and it was really interesting to see. I listened to the audiobook while reading the book in front of me, which I think is probably the best way to read this book.

Overall, I liked this book. I liked the story and how it was presented.

However, I found myself unable to connect with the characters. I just didn't really care that much about them. I don't know if it was just me or if it was how they were written, but I didn't connect with them much. I liked some characters like Karen, Camila, and Daisy, but I couldn't really care less about the rest of them.

Other than that, it was a good read.

It's been a rough reading month.

Overall, I had no issues with the book, it was well-written and enjoyable, but I had to force myself to read it.

GNAWING AT THE BARS OF MY ENCLOSURE

This was just as good as Letters to the Lost OH MY GOD. The writing was once again beautiful and I almost cried a couple of times in my choir teacher's office. I ATE THIS UP.

The characters were so well-written and deep. I will admit, I found Emma a little annoying and bitchy at first, but she grew on me. Also, I think she was supposed to be like that. I loved the part where her friend calls her out for essentially being a hypocritical asshole and she actually fixes it.

The romance was beautifully done. It could possibly be considered a slight insta-love, but I don't even care, I loved it so much.

Just like with Letters to the Lost, I finished it in less than 48 hours. An amazing read.

Just like the first book, this is well-written, with layered characters, genius clues and games, and overall a good time.

However, there is one big issue I have with this book that knocked the rating down this much.

(MAJOR SPOILERS)

For a decent chunk of the book, we were toeing the line of incest with Avery and her stupid love triangle with two of the Hawthorne boys (Jameson and Grayson). For a while, we believed that Avery was Toby Hawthorne's daughter, Jameson and Grayson's adoptive uncle (because we find out he was adopted), which would have made Avery the adoptive first cousin of Jameson and Grayson. Biologically, they aren't related, but as Toby Hawthorne literally says in the book, "biology isn't everything." And though we find out Avery isn't actually his daughter, we thought that for the longest time. But even being that closely related didn't stop the romances. Which, personally, if I found out the guy I was into was my adoptive first cousin, I would have done a full 180 in the other direction.

That whole near-incest thing did not need to happen. I wish it didn't happen. It's not that hard to make sure your romances don't even hint at incest.

Other than that and the continuation of that annoying love triangle, this was a good book.

Okay, I think I'm in another slight reading slump. It was good, but I either wasn't enjoying it or just wasn't feeling it. A little too dense for me right now.

I guess I've just committed to a trashy YA series... not that I'm complaining.

This book is definitely trashy YA, but just because it's trashy, doesn't mean it's not good. In fact, this book was great. I was always trying to guess what certain clues meant (and I was always wrong or drawing a blank), and following along with the story from the perspective of someone who was literally thrown into this mess was really interesting.

I've got to say that Jennifer Lynn Barnes has got to be some kind of genius to craft this sort of book. Figuring out a puzzle and how all of the pieces and clues fit into it requires a lot of brains, so props to her.

There is a love triangle in this book... so, yeah. I'm not the biggest fan of love triangles, personally, but this one was semi-tolerable.

This is a tiny complaint that may have just been my copy or the batch my copy came from, but there were a decent amount of typos, especially at the beginning. Nothing crazy, but my brain stumbled over them a little bit.

OH MY GOD WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN

This was such a powerful story. I'm about to cry just writing this review. Greif was represented in an amazing way, where there is no true guidebook on dealing with loss.  Both characters have experienced tremendous losses in their lives and being an absolute mess is just a part of healing.

Speaking of the characters, all of them, but especially Juliet and Declan were some of the best-written characters I've read. I swear, I felt what they were feeling. I wanted to give them the biggest hugs.

The romance was also gorgeous. It was a beautiful slow-burn and kind of a will-they-won't-they situation.

The writing was stunning. It invoked emotion in the reader, which not many books are able to do.

I ate this story up. I read the whole book in less than 48 hours. One of the best books I've read so far this year.

This is the first book I've read from R.F. Kuang, which is shocking, I know. I haven't gotten to Babel yet.

It's really interesting to read a book from the perspective of a horrible person and a character you're supposed to hate. Normally, authors try their best to convince their audience that their characters are good people or in the right, but R.F. Kuang presents Juniper neutrally, kind of allowing the audience to decide whether or not she's a good person (though sane people know she's not a good person).

I loved R.F. Kuang's writing style. I liked reading all of the thoughts in Juniper's mind and watching the story unfold from her eyes. This book was really good, and it opens up a lot of conversations.

Would I say it's life-changing? Probably not. But it does break barriers, which is what books like this are meant to do.

How this book managed to worm its way into a 4-star rating, even I don't know.

Okay, so I went into this book with low expectations after hearing other people talk about it, so I wasn't surprised by the objectively bad writing and the slightly insufferable main character. Of course, it's still something to complain about. Also, the romance was pretty much an insta-love. The only thing I liked when I started this was the world. The world is cool. I will also say that Danielle L. Jensen's imagery is great.

But, as I kept reading... I realized I was enjoying it. Was the writing atrocious? Absolutely, but, God, was I having a good time reading this book.

If I was rating this purely on quality, it would be around a 2-star. But I don't do my ratings like that (I mostly rate on enjoyability, with quality as a secondary factor), so this book managed to somehow be 4 stars. If you like quality writing with a likable main character, I wouldn't recommend this to you, but if you're in for a trashy read and a decent time, then I'd recommend it.
