The Secret History by Donna Tartt
4.0
Okay, so I usually would like to wait to write a review but I’m so charged I must right down my thoughts. This book was very slow to start, but not in the same sense of a historical fiction but almost in a dream like state. The author is very unreliable, and it would make sense that the beginning of this book is almost too good to be true. The characters were not very interesting, they were all just snobby addicts with a lot of money. What was interesting was what they had gotten themselves into, and the author cleverly used these boring people to highlight how ridiculous the whole matter was. It was done in the sense where she didn’t want you to get attached to the characters, and honestly for good reason. None of them were likable, but again that’s totally the point. My only faults with the book are the way the women in the story are written and I didn’t really feel like any of the characters relationships, within the friend group, were fleshed out all that well. I didn’t understand why they were as close as they were; there bond felt very flimsy. The ending really sold it for me, I really like the way it ended it had me on the edge of my seat and even though I felt as though the ending was the only way for the story to truly end; I still found myself shocked. Good book.

Took me a while to read it only cause I’m in a bit of a book slump - uhm yeah still hate government will forever hate the government. The reality this book paints is so bleak, but it’s an important one to witness. To not read this book to the very end would be a shame.

At first I was going to give this author praise for so accurately describing a delusional woman who so obviously suffers from borderline personality disorder. All the keynotes were there: grand delusions, narcissism, a “favorite person”, the ability for that favorite person to change rapidly, her coldness etc etc. It WOULD’VE been brilliant, but the ending ruined it for me. I’m acutely disappointed in it, and really would’ve loved something more impactful.

This book was funny at some parts, pointless in others, preachy, and sexist. I can see what his point was in writing this book, which if you have read this book is a redundant sentence in Itself. The writing was very good, but it took me a while to get into it. I liked how it was a very easy story to follow, and I appreciate how nonsensical It was while still portraying a message. If you don’t like women being portrayed as nothing more than objects, I would not give this book a read. I think I would like to read other works from this author to at least give this author a chance.

Still thinking about this book after finishing it - it was beautiful. This was an ending to a book that really solidified the character and the stories motivation, just breathtaking truly.
