Finishing this felt like a chore. It took me two months and many sessions to finish. Franzen is a beautiful writer and the way he captures family dynamics is uniquely his. I usually don’t mind about unlikeable characters but I just didn’t care about them or their plot points. Some parts were straight up painful and I had a do partial skim (detailed pages of explanations of the drug trail). Also, a few unlikely sub plots and went no where - felt unnecessary and didn’t add to the story.

A bit of a disappointment for me because Franzen’s Crossroads is a 5/5 for me but this one just didn’t do it for me.

Read this book without having an idea of what this novel was about including the genre. This made me fall in love with this story even more. Enjoyed the unique take of a very common sci-fi genre but with a focus less on the sci-fi but on depth of the characters and their inner world.

Very poetic and beautifully written. Though 2nd person narrative is not my favourite but very much necessary to preserve the expressive and intimate nature of the love story. Reunion of the couple happened too fast at the end. I lost interest in the couple 3/4 the way through.. but was pulled back in by the stories of black violence.
