Age gap romances aren’t usually my thing, but Hazelwood always writes the most interesting characters/relationships.

I laughed quite a bit reading this one, the FMC is witty and the MMC matches her stride for stride—which always makes me feel more invested in the romantic arc, since often characters seem forced to fit into each others boxes way too hard. Hazelwood is one of the best at making the characters seem organic and relatable.

Oh and rest assured, Hazelwood has, again made the distribution of large men (and yes, I mean that in both ways) seem wholly unrealistic, but damn it if I didn’t eat up every word anyway (take that as you wish as well😂)

This was far more thought provoking than I expected, and deeply humanizing. It’s told from the perspective of an unreliable narrator, but the way it’s told—the voice, the sentence structure, the emotion—is all so raw it humbles our perception of how others deal with grief and anxiety and just everyday shit. It was the perfect length with a choppy—yet satisfying—pace. Check TWs.

A story of love and its many definitions, about family and its magnitudes, and about grief and all its stages—so much more than just a “romcom.”

Some TWs—creative burn out, dementia, loss of a loved one.

I don’t know what I was expecting when I started reading this, but I was pleasantly surprised. I laughed, I felt seen, I considered what I have to look forward to as I get older. I love her romcoms, and it turns out I admire her the raw honesty in her essays too.

A fast paced read with a good mystery and a looming creepiness that hangs over the story like a dark cloud.  Nothing is left open-ended in the end like some mysteries tend to do. The pictures really take the story to the next level, so I recommend reading the book physically.

Even though I have anxiety about this book’s theme, I found this one thought provoking. What would you do if you knew when you would die? Would you want to know? There are a handful of POVs and each character stands out in their own way. Erlick put a lot of thought into how the masses would react to such an event, creating a realistic epidemic for the reader to contemplate. What happens is frighteningly believable—so much so I paused a few times to think about what I would do in any given situation.

Holy moly, what a book. I admire a unique magic system with tangible objects, with clever characters, with beautiful world building. This book is visual and rhythmic—the story is perfectly paced and has no problem keeping your attention no matter the scene. If you want to get lost in an epic world, in an epic adventure, this is the book for you.

If you read close enough, the ending is predictable, but in no way does it rob the story of its impact.

Lastly, I want to point out the romance in this book—how it’s woven so cohesively into the story, like the most ardent of braids, if only because each twist and turn of the plaits is excruciatingly satisfying. Gillig should teach a masterclass in yearning, because holy hell. No spoilers, but just know “holy hell” covers it perfectly.

This short story is one with the potential to haunt a reader as they’re reading and well after they finish. I can’t say much that hasn’t been said about this already, but now that I’ve read it, I understand why, when this story was published, it was banned and discredited—god forbid a woman tell the truth about postpartum depression and the role she was forced to play in her household.

The format, the voice, and the arc is all beautifully articulated in such a short duration.

I read this because my husband said it was his favorite story he had to read in school. It’s tense and thought provoking, and even though it’s short, the theme of hunted vs hunter is rich and the ambiguous ending leaves the reader to wonder if the main character put the monster down or was the monster themselves?
