This was overall an interesting story, with a unique magic system. However, I wasn’t particularly attached to any of the characters, and I think the story’s arc was a bit too slow. As much as I love dual POVs, I don’t know if this story needed it since there really wasn’t a different in voice for the characters for me—wants/needs, sure, but voice, not really. And while I liked the magic system, I don’t know if it was completely thought through—the gems being given willingly to a specific person didn’t hold up so well at parts (the captain thought he was giving the brooch back to Jameson, not Roger, so would the gem have worked? And the gems being thrown on the stage in the big tent? Wouldn’t Luxe be the only one who could use them?). Maybe I’m overthinking it, but they stress SO much about the gems being given willingly to a revelle so often it didn’t make much sense to me. I admired the love story and how important family was to the characters, and I thought the setting/time was well done. Overall, I enjoyed it, just might have loved it if it were tightened up a bit.

I don’t know how Wilson does it, but he invites readers into these richly written stories that are short and important and so intensely human, and I am deeply thankful for it.

This was a really fun book and so different from Hawkins’ romance writing. Her voice was strong and unique for each character, especially how she presented Ruby on the page. I predicted the ending, so that’s why it wasn’t a five star for me (this is my personal rating system for mysteries), but I loved every minute of this book, from the writing to the setting.

A cute story about family and relationships. The prose was a bit all over the place for me (I don’t like when we randomly switch between third person characters in the same scene) and it was a bit slow paced overall. Though, there was a satisfying conclusion.

Short, direct, and when it pops off, it POPS off. This is like the movie Ready or Not but with a slight twist to the MC. Strong characters, even when you don’t want to like them, and a satisfying arc.

I’m not even sure how to describe this. Only that its main POV is the reason I stuck with it. This is not a happy story, but the way Nugent tells it is intriguing. I personally didn’t care for the ending, though I understand why, arc-wise, it worked out in such ways. But I was hoping for a bit more…satisfaction after going through so many emotions with the main POV. Even though it’s an interesting read, I warn it does have a disturbing foundation and a troubling arc, so check TWs before you read it.
I listened to the audiobook and thought the narrators did a great job of bringing the characters to life.

I really, really enjoyed this book. There’s mystery, there’s romance, there’s trials—and intriguing world-building. Even though I saw a few things coming it didn’t rob the storyline at all. If you like to interact with books like I do, expect to talk to these characters and feel all sorts of ways when they don’t listen. Eager for book 2!
