The best TJR I've read so far. Malibu Rising and After I Do don't hold a candle to the brilliance of this book. I didn't know I could care about tennis so much. I didn't know a book would lead me down a youtube spiral at 3am watching Venus Williams teach me different types of serves. I adored this book so wholeheartedly. I want to live inside this story longer. I found Carrie infuriating - and her father moreso. I loved this book.

I think what bothered me was at the end of it all, I couldn't figure out why they loved each other. The one moment I saw it was when they both reading each other's emails - petty and messed up and hilarious and something that felt really real, something that makes you and your partner fucked up in exactly the right ways for each other.
I feel like the values of marriage were there. How to make marriage work, what marriage means, what life looks like in and out of marriage. How to make a partnership work and the importance of loving each other more than hating the stupid socks on the floor. The importance of compromise. The importance of time to yourself. The importance of continuing to find each other attractive and knowing that others find your partner attractive too. So much generic (but good) advice about marriage.
But at the end of it all, why stay unless you love them. Unless they are your best friend. Unless building a life with them feels you with giddy joy because they're just so much FUN to be around. Your values align and you must work hard at your relationship - of course. But if you're going to spend a life with them, why do that unless you just love each other's company? And honestly, I went through this whole book and learned a lot about how they could improve their marriage, but not about what they just loved about each other.
