E.B. White encapsulates the spirit of New York City in this book. Even though the city is constantly changing, its depth and its spirit stays true over the years. There's a reason people flock to this city, and White's managed to capture it perfectly.
If you are a starving artist or wish to read about starving artists and beat poets, this is the book to read. Patti Smith's tale of love, art, and the '70s movement is fantastic.
I liked it enough as a distraction but it wasn't a book that really grabbed me. there's hardly any conflict or resolution, and some of the characters are rather annoying. they are characters that commit the same actions throughout the story, and these actions achieve the same results. there's very little of an actual story, simply a passage of time and actions.
no Victorian author has been able to capture the harshness of a loveless marriage the way Anne Brontë has. it flies in the face of a typical romance novel, and is truly revolutionary for its time. Anne Brontë did not get the recognition she deserved, even from her own sisters. this is a must read, for feminists and for those who are tired of the kind of story that Lifetime would produce.
