I really enjoyed reading this nostalgic and charming coming of age story that had a quirky blend of humor and heart.  While I don’t have a artistic bone in my body. I could definitely remember being an awkward teen in 1996 small town, before having access internet, and wondering what I was gonna do all summer long… I felt a familiar kinship with Frankie that made me love her story even more.

My only criticism would be that I felt like the end kind of cut off abruptly, I would liked to have seen what the fallout of her secret being exposed finally was…

The pacing of Bandit Queens was a little slow in just a few parts for me, but overall I found myself full on laughing out loud throughout at this surprisingly dark comedy of errors that simultaneously tackles very serious topics like domestic oppression of women, abuse, alcoholism and casteism.

If you enjoy reading about complex, flawed characters, unexpected friendships and female empowerment, with a little murder, mayhem, and revenge thrown in then this might be the book for you!
