"I'm so scared," Sal said, and maybe there really was something wrong with her, because she hadn't meant to say it at all. It had just slid out of her mouth like something too-oiled, and she shuddered at the sense of pain throbbing through her. It wasn't a physical sensation, but was pain nonetheless."

"It was one of those days so blue and sunny that you had to be flying. The sky reached in your window first thing in the morning and dragged you out, flinging you up and up and up into the beautiful wing-catching wind. You had to soar and spin and dive because a day this perfect might never come again."

"At first she thought there were glowworms in the water, too, and then she realized she was seeing the reflections of stars. Far above them was a hole in the roof, big enough for a dragon to fly through with her wings outstretched. Big enough for the moons to shine through, casting broken silvery-green light across the still water. Two of the moons were visible through the hole, half full and swathed with clouds in the growing twilight."

Talons and tails, this series continues to be entertaining as hell!

"I want to curl up inside you and sleep there...deep inside your ears..."

Eerie & bizarre, Uzumaki will linger long after the final page.

"For one white-hot instant, that dark instinct to overcome and overpower, to kiss and bruise, flared to life in my stomach. I imagined myself slotting my fingers into all that black hair and tugging until her mouth was hovering over mine. I imagined the soft, surprised sound she might make, the sweetness of her breath ghosting across my lips."

An Education in Malice by S.T. Gibson is a dark gothic fantasy novel about the bloodthirsty pursuit of knowledge, among other things!

Endless thanks to the folks at Orbit Books for providing me with a copy!

In the beginning when Laura met Carmilla, there was a bitter rivalry that exploded between them, brought on by an intoxicating poetry professor, Ms. De Lafontaine.

An Education in Malice is a darkly poetic, deeply uncomfortable (large age gap, inappropriate student/professor relationship, uneven power dynamics, obsession) and yet surprisingly romantic (HELLO GIFTING A FIRST-EDITION SYLVIA PLATH FOR CHRISTMAS) story loosely based on Le Fanu's Carmilla.

It's a jagged knife in your gut, deliberate and immense. At first taking your breath away, then slowly burning as it twists inside you, ratcheting up the adrenaline until it jangles your nerves and then you feel the wound that has been left.

Oof.

An Education in Malice will be released on February 13th!
