A Spy in the House by Y.S. Lee

I really enjoyed this book. The dynamic between James and Mary was fun and cute and I liked seeing James’ way of thinking change via the way he talked in his POV chapters. Sometimes, though, he displayed a red flag that wasn’t resolved: “James Easton had never before experienced the urge to wring a girl’s neck. It was a powerful one, however, and he kept his fist clenched round her coarse cotton shirt in order to avoid acting on it.” “He didn’t want to talk about new developments. All he wanted to do was to roar at her until she cried and then pack her off somewhere safe” Yeah that’s not cute.

I also didn’t appreciate how selfishness (
Angelica leaving her fiance and basically ruining him because now he’s going to jail
) was equated to emancipation

I felt like everyone’s maturing in this book and I like it.

The mean girls get development, which was surprising and cool. On the other hand, a lot of things are undone, like
Marianne’s boyfriend suddenly being a jerk
and
and Ana breaking up with Connor, although that was admittedly realistic.

Once again, there a lot of very funny moments.

I was impressed by the imposter syndrome storyline (and she’s only 12 in the story, oof.) It reminded me of being an insecure tween, but it was also a hopeful storyline that ended in a satisfying way.

A lot of the relationships were very sweet, like the guy training her, Marianne’s boyfriend showing up to cheer for her, etc.

In other news: I was glad
she and Connor finally got together!

This one could be tought to slog through, but the author warns you of that and the incredible detail is kind of the point.

The writing is good, though, and the analogies helped a lot.

Ugh.

 [Rant ahead:

First of all, too much touching. Ew. Knock it off.

Second of all, NOBODY COMMUNICATES!!! People kept on wanting to tell America things and she was just like "uh I already know what ur going to say cause I'm smart like that so why dont you just leave me alone". How stupid are you America. Everybody keeps secrets, everybody goes behind each other's backs, and in the end the two get married even though America still hasn't explained the deal with Aspen? Like at this point they're just straight-up headed for infidelity.

Then there's the whole going with various persons at the same time, not hearing each other out, cheating, doing too much too soon and the sudden deaths at the end? I don't object to that, but America literally had no PTSD from watching Celeste GET SHOT IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD LIKE WHAT. Also, it felt like a cop-out to just kill the king off. Like, oh the Southern rebels are bad but they sure were convenient. (hide spoiler)]

Anyway. It annoyed me a lot, this book.

DNF'd after chapter 5.
 Reasons:
 -vulgarity
 -fortune telling, card reading, etc.
-lots of messaging about racism and sexism and yes those are important but I want to escape the world when I'm in a book, not read about politics in another format than I usually do

Tendency to go into great detail of all the special cases, which confused things.
