Started off with her having sex with lots of dudes and ladies in a vain effort to be remembered, and the demon or whatever she struck a bargain with was seen as some type of attractive male, so I was done.

So... the victims died in the middle of s*x and their hearts exploded all over the room in a very gory fashion. Then we had the bad language, and I soon realised this was just not my thing.

I started getting a bit conflicted with the magic. It just felt very dark and sinister, even though we were supposed to like it.
And then about halfway one of the MCs decided to plan a murder so I was out.

The third person narrative stripped the story of what made it unique: Eugenides' personality.
The violence was also very over the top. Not that having people's hands cut off</spoilers> isn't something I regularly see in fiction I read, it's that it's just shown in a... weird way. I don't know how to put it. It probably has something to do with the begging and the fact that Eugenides marries this queen at the end apparantly? . Yeah, weird.

The whole "racism" talk was nice and all, but all the characters felt like they were just token non-whites. Lots of stories of racism against non-whites, but not a mention of the massacres in South Africa of white people made it feel very one-sided to me.
Authors always act like talking about racism is such a brave, never-before-done thing. It's not.
