Tender Is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica
4.0
⭐⭐⭐⭐.5/5
**Review**
Agustina Bazterrica’s dystopian novel, “Tender is the Flesh,” creates a universe where human beings are bred and killed for foodstuff due to a virus that has made animal flesh unsafe. The story concentrates on Marcos, an employee in the human meat industry who undergoes a moral dilemma when he is given a human “specimen” to look after. The novel’s plot is interwoven with a distressing normalization of human consumption. Marcos, who has grown numb to the cruelty of the industry, starts to doubt his place within it and its morality after coming into contact with a female human being designated for slaughter. This shift brings out several issues.
The major theme in the book is the dehumanization of people turning into livestock. Marcos’ inner struggle exposes ethical dilemmas and how societal values shape individual conscience. Marcos's consequent alienation from his humanity and his resulting sense of detachment are deeply examined, underscoring the psychological cost of living in such an environment that strips away all traces of human dignity. Marcos, the protagonist in this story loses faith in his occupation and also criticizes business practices.
The book is known for pushing the boundaries in dystopian fiction and inviting readers to deeply reflect on their human nature and morality which are at times uncomfortable. Still, some readers may find its content graphic and themes dark and hard to digest.
This book presents an uncomfortable truth about humanity that needs to be faced by those who care about ethics. Bazterrica’s chilling portrayal offers a critique of potential dehumanization in a society where human life is made a commodity in itself. Exposing this kind of work may even be too much for many people; however, it can also be seen as challenging reading material for science fiction enthusiasts interested in morals.
