This was a good look at life for blacks in the 40s 50s and 60s. Although most of the themes arent new, it is very hard to learn about what life was like not too long ago

I liked how direct this book was. There is too much dancing around issues and blaming other people for our problems. I thought they did a good job relating their war experiences to leadership outside of war.
I don't like books that glorify war and killing, which this book very much does. I realize it is something that happens and that we should learn from it, but we don't have to high five over how cool it is.

I got this book after liking the Cactus series by the same author so much.
Overall, this was a fun book of adventure among unlikely friends. It helps us remember that there is always more to someone that what we can see.

It is very difficult for me to give this book a rating or review. I needed to listen to it very quickly (3x speed) in order to finish before book club discussion. As such, my rating should be read with that in mind .

This is surely a much better read when you can take time to get to know all the characters. To me there was one major storyline with a few others that were less told and faded into the background. I sure hope that as a society we have moved beyond things that this book portrays. The pack horse library was a very cool program. This was a good book, but I just didn't connect due to my reading circumstances

There is a lot in this book. The author takes a lot of hard stands. More important than a line by line critique is an assessment of the overall theme: as a dad you have tremendous influence on your daughters, so use that to help them through life. Most of it comes down to just spending time and letter her know that you love her.

Despite being called "Mayflower", this book only talks a little about the Mayflower. I was hoping for an account of the pilgrims, learn who they were before coming to America and how they learned to survive and thrive.
This was hurried over in the first part of the book, but it mostly deals with the following generations.
I liked the first part, but not so much the rest of it. It had way too many people, places and tribes to keep straight. Also, it built upon itself, so if you forgot who someone was your had to either be lost or go back and find them.
I just wish the author had kept a more narrow scope.

A lot of good things, but nothing that really goes beyond common sense. There was a little hyperbole in the book that bugged me a bit

When I started this I was sure it was fiction because it just didn't seem that all of these things could happen, but then I found out it's real and I looked the book better knowing that.
This just goes to show, you can never be sure what someone else has going on

I liked this. It's a very different perspective than what you hear most of the time in lds culture.
