I tried to hard to like this one. Especially since it’s my bookclub’s pick for this month. But alas, I could not force myself to read through this any longer. I did not vibe with the writing style. The pacing was off. The characters all fell flat for me. I was bored and felt like nothing really was actually happening. Most of everything was being told to the reader rather than shown. There was far too much descriptive imagery for every single possible thing. And this is coming from a reader that adores descriptive imagery. It just was not for me. DNF @ 269 pages.

This is such a cute book series to read with your kiddos. My son (5) has been having the best time reading these with me.

“There is an art to falling in love. Akin to a gentle rain—soft, exuberant. Sort of like the ebb and flow of a wave. Delicate, rushed, haunting.”

First and foremost, I would like to thank Liliana Hastings for sending me an early copy of her book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for trusting me to meet these characters you've created and to consume the words you've written.

I adored this book. It is so beautiful and lyrical. It felt like a rainy day in the middle of fall—when the pitter-patter of the rain gives you the best soundtrack to read to, the smell of fallen leaves fills the air, and the taste of warm apple cider is present on your tongue. It was such a cozy read. It made me want to curl up under my favorite, coziest blanket and throw on some classical music and just read all day. It also made me ache for the lack of city lights so I could gaze at the stars all night.

summary ~
Nova Hawkins is trying to find a way to cope with the death of her mother. She's desperate to see the world through her eyes, to see its beauty and embrace it with her entire being. Atlas Hale is drifting through life. The weight of existence in such a gruesome world is heavy on his shoulders. On chance—fate, some might say—the two meet. And somehow, life starts to not feel so awful.

I loved how poetic the writing is. There were many moments that I would read a sentence or paragraph several times before moving on because I was so moved by the words.

There were times that some of the writing felt repetitive in the words/phrases used. I found myself skimming over some of the words rather than reading them fully because I had already read it in previous sentences. Despite this, the writing style and the overall feeling of the book was astonishing.

I definitely would have loved for the story to have been longer, given that The Consequences of Falling is only a mere 207 pages. The length of the book does make some of the aspects of the story feel rushed and a little awkward, especially toward the end.

“He pauses for a moment, briefly. It takes him a moment, but when he speaks again, he says, ‘I think I could love you one day, eventually.’ He admits; to her, the trees, the grass, and anyone else who could listen.”

I would have loved to get a bit more on Atlas’s background. We get the gist of his upbringing and why he is the way that he is, but I just wanted more. I needed something more to connect with him a little bit better. Even still, I did adore him and his brooding self. And I did find myself relating to him quite a bit. I felt his intense sense of being burdensome to the people around him and how he keeps everything bottled inside because he doesn’t want to sully another person’s day/life. And I feel like many of us can relate to that aspect of his personality immensely. I did, however, feel that his openness with Nova was rather sudden. It felt almost as though he was one person one chapter, and then suddenly he was a completely new and renewed version of himself in the next.

I also found it so easy to relate with Nova. I have been fascinated with the stars and space and all that it holds for as long as I can remember. That addition to the story made this book all the more enjoyable for me and it also made it possible for me to form a connection with Nova instantly.

Overall, I really loved this read and would absolutely recommend it.

I really wanted to get into this… I’ve been CRAVING a hockey romance. But this severely lacked any actual hockey. I was basically just told that the love interest was a hockey player, but for all I know he could actually just be a war criminal or something lol. The writing style was also very amateur and obnoxious. It felt like something a high schooler would read on Wattpad.
