31/7/23 REREAD: somehow I love this dark anti-fairytale even more than when I initially read it nearly one year ago. 10/10 🙌🏻
This was incredible. I was so invested in Emma’s story and her stubbornness and passion. A feminist anthem of a novel, very 🦆 the patriarchy. This was a fantasy novel that followed no tropes you typically so in a YA fantasy, it was surprising in the very best way. Everyone needs to read this beautiful story.

I have since seen some enlightening reviews on the themes of ableism that had gone right over my head while reading, I have now dropped my star rating because it just didn’t sit with me well.

“Some love was just the bad, all the time: an endless parade of electrified bones and drowned lungs and hearts that burned to a cinder inside the cage of your chest.”
The Book Eaters is a harrowing gothic horror that speaks of love and the things we would do for that love. One of the most unique books I’ve ever read, full of powerful quotes that had me reaching for a notebook and pen. This one of those books that I have a hard time reviewing, because it’s just so hard to explain. I absolutely loved this book, and I definitely devoured it. I absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a unique horror book as we descend into spooky season.
This reads like an anti-fairytale. Full of action, suspense and hauntingly dark scenes that will leave you reeling. The themes on motherhood were poignant and heartbreaking, as a mother myself it left me shaken at times. The “book teeth” are terrifying and live in my nightmares. The politics between the ‘Eaters was fascinating, as is their species in general.

4.5 Stars ⭐️
I first read this book when I was very young, when it was still titled Sophia’s Secret and I’ve been wanting to re read it for years. An enchanting and gripping tale of love and love lost that keeps you wanting more. I’m a sucker for any historical fiction that deals with the Jacobites so I devoured this all over again.
