Somatic Descent: How to Unlock the Deepest Wisdom of the Body by Reginald Ray
3.0
This book was a bit challenging to read. The information in it was good but as a practical instruction on Somatic Descent or somatic meditation there was a lot lacking.
The book begins with a discussion of the Soma and the wisdom of the Soma. The author's intention is for the reader to be able to gain greater insight through tapping into the wisdom of the Soma. He then describes the Somatic Descent process going through it in phases and steps. This is where it got a little difficult.
There are accompanying audio files that guide through the process and I think that's part of the problem with this book. The book does not stand on its own and really only serves to expand upon the audio files. Also clouding the waters, the author breaks down the process into a series of phases but later in the book breaks each phase into steps and refers to the steps rather than the phase. For me, it caused some disconnect between the audio files and earlier material in the book and the author's observations of the process.
Overall, I think this book is a good introduction but it left me wanting more.

Awaken Clairvoyant Energy by Cyndi Dale
1.0
I found this book quite disappointing. From the description, I really anticipated a more full fledged program for developing clairvoyance. Instead, the book contains perhaps a handful of exercises and then a great deal on analysing visions. While I can understand the importance of analyzing your visions to determine which ones are genuine clairvoyant visions, it wasn't the primary thing I purchased this book for. The author includes numerous charts on correspondences (colors, symbols, etc) of which there are reference works which are far more complete. Overall, they felt more like filler than useful information. Overall, this book, in my mind, didn't achieve what it set out to achieve.
Your Body is Your Brain: Leverage Your Somatic Intelligence to Find Purpose, Build Resilience, Deepen Relationships and Lead More Powerfully by Amanda Blake
3.0
I'm a little mixed about this book. While I thought it was very good overall, I didn't feel like it fully delivered what was promised. Let me share the good and the not great about this book.
On the good, the author puts forth a really great 4-part model for embodied leadership and breaks the book down into chapters by the actions and traits of each of the 4 parts. Each chapter has a really interesting case study on how someone used somatic work and embodied leadership to overcome their personal challenges. Each chapter also gives some great information on the science behind somatics and embodied leadership. I found that really useful and interesting. Overall, this would've made it a 5-star book IF, it had been clearer that it was primarily case studies of how working with a somatic coach for embodied leadership coach can help you.
This brings me to the bad. Actual practices that the reader can do to "Leverage your somatic intelligence...etc." are left to a short appendix in the back. They left me wanting. While there were some good practices and instruction, I don't think that they're going to allow the average reader to do what the title suggests.
Overall, the big takeaway from the book is that a somatic coach can be extremely effective and helpful. The average reader of this book will need to find and work with one to achieve the book's stated objective as it's rather light on actual techniques to put to use.
