I discovered this series in 2005, and I don't remember how I felt when I first read this book back then in my twenties, but what really hit me hard on this reread is what happens with Grandma Mazur. I always thought it was despicable to harm the elderly, but it hits closer now because I've had a lot more experience with older people now and know just how vulnerable they are, and the writing in some of the scenes with Grandma Mazur is so evocative and easy to visualize and makes what happens that much harder to stomach.

One of the things I like best about this is it's funny without being as ridiculous as some of the other books in the series, plus Steph put in some effort to develop skills for her new job and planned to continue to do so. It's too bad she doesn't really follow through in the ensuing books (at least not to the best of my recollection). (Of course I quit reading the series several years ago and don't know if she eventually does follow through. I guess I'll find out when I eventually get around to reading the ones that came out after I quit the series.)
