I discovered this series in 2005, and I don't remember how I felt when I first read this book back then in my twenties, but what really hit me hard on this reread is what happens with Grandma Mazur. I always thought it was despicable to harm the elderly, but it hits closer now because I've had a lot more experience with older people now and know just how vulnerable they are, and the writing in some of the scenes with Grandma Mazur is so evocative and easy to visualize and makes what happens that much harder to stomach.
