THEY CALLED US EXCEPTIONAL by Prachi Gupta is an incredible memoir where the author writes to her mother. All the things that Prachi wished to ask or discuss with her mother, but couldn’t because of her father’s toxic control over her mother and control over Prachi as well. This book highlights the malicious effects of the model minority myth and the societal demand of respectability where you’re forced to choose success and wealth at the expense of your mental health. This was difficult to listen to because of the subject matter and what the author, her mother, and older brother goes through at the hands of her supposedly loving and doting father. If I did have a physical copy of this, my copy would have been thrown across the room at least 10 times.
