SONGS ON ENDLESS REPEAT by Anthony Veasna So is a posthumous collection of fiction and nonfiction essays where So digs deep into the first gen refugee experience and its effects on our parents and our upbringing. It’s evident that So has complicated feelings with his Cambodian upbringing and the model minority myth effect in his community (as do I), but it is also palpable that he loves his community. I love the interconnected fiction pieces and the way he painted his beloved Cambodian town. His nonfiction essays are my favorite. The last essay in this collection “Baby Yeah” about his friend’s suicide is so heartbreaking and written to beautifully. Once you read it, you’ll know.

THUNDER SONG by Sasha taqwšəblu LaPointe is a beautiful collection of essays that is deeply moving, deeply personal, and deeply Indigenous. LaPointe owns being a Two-Spirit Coast Salish woman and reconciles with the way white settler colonialism has seeped its way in every part of her lineage, her experiences with sexuality and veganism, and her connection with the physical world. This is another subject matter heavy book, but LaPointe writes with such clarity especially when she intertwines stories of her great-grandmother’s legacy and her interconnectedness with nature that feels grounded. LaPointe herself narrates this one and she’s a very good storyteller, highly recommend!
