Sugar by Bernice L. McFadden is a small town story, set during the 50s, of a friendship between a daughterless-mother named Pearl and a motherless-daughter named Sugar. People disapprove of this relationship because Pearl is a church going woman and Sugar is a prostitute. I would have never guessed the ending of this book and will definitely be picking up the sequel, The Bitter Earth, to continue following Sugar’s story!
