i've gone back and forth with my opinion on lolita countless times, but at the end of the day, i have a lot of respect for it. i struggle to put into words why, but i do. i'm very 50/50 when it comes to enjoying morally grey characters and distrustful narrators; i think to enjoy a character like this you should want to root for them, even when they aren't doing the right thing, and with a character like humbert, that is obviously extremely hard. but the fact that, even for a moment, we may be able to sympathize with him, or at least consider it, proves just how powerful nobokov's writing is. lolita is so interesting because it takes a character that should be the villain and makes him the main character, forcing you to hear his perspective. it is, unfortunately, humbert's story. it forces you out of your comfort zone and there's really nothing else like it.

i was curious about the coho hype so i decided to start with november 9 after my co-worker recommended it to me and... yeah, her books just aren't my thing. everything about this story felt so outlandish and unrealistic and i just could not take it seriously at all; it felt like i was cringing at something on every single page :,) i will admit it was pretty entertaining though, maybe i'll check out some of her other books...

i found it very difficult to stay focused on this story during my first read-through; i think the jumping between past/present/future in particular made it hard for me to follow along and frustrated me. however, i think this is still a very interesting story and would definitely like to revisit it in the future in hopes of gaining a better understanding/appreciation of it :)

who let him cook????

anyways... in my opinion the antics of the invisible man are much more comedic than scary, and i didn't particularly enjoy the pacing/plot of the book. however, i respect it for being a classic in the horror/thriller genre and for being the original bodily horror story. very cool character idea and definitely revolutionary (within its genre) for its time.

i was a bit nervous to finally read this book because of how hyped up it is, but it absolutely lived up to its expectations! it starts off a bit slow and uninteresting but will quickly grab your attention and keep you hanging on until the last word. the plot twists were very well done; they were not predictable and boring but not too outlandish either. very well crafted story and amazing character development that makes it feel so real. highly recommend, especially if you like historical fiction and queer characters! :)
