Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

I went into this blind and absolutely loved it. It was such a unique story and I loved the rivals to lovers slow burn between Roman and Iris. There was such a wisty magical element that made me feel like i was breathing in the smell of a really old book as i was reading (if that makes sense haha). Overall would recommend if you like love letters, banter, rivals to lovers, war setting, and slow burns!
Some of my favorite quotes:
“It takes courage to let down your armor, to welcome people to see you as you are. Sometimes I feel the same as you: I can’t risk having people behold me as I truly am. But there’s also a small voice in the back of my mind, a voice that tells me, “You will miss so much by being so guarded.”
“I don’t want to wake up when i’m seventy-four only to realize I haven’t lived.”
“The days to come will only grow darker. And when you find something good? You hold on to it. You don’t waste time worrying about things that won’t even matter in the end. Rather, you take a risk for that light.”
“But I realize that people are just people, and they carry their own set of fears, dreams, desires, pain, and mistakes. I can’t expect someone else to make me feel complete; I must find it on my own.”
“Endings were often found in beginnings”
“I love you, Iris. And I want you to see me. I want you to know me. Through the smoke and the firelight and kilometers that once dwelled between us. Do you see me?”

What a gorgeous sequel to an already amazing book! This was the perfect continuation of the original story and I absolutely loved the way it unfolded. From the discussion of heavy topics, the love between Roman and Iris, the strength of Iris' found family to the overall story line of the war - I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this book! It still had the same nostalgic feeling of smelling an old book as the first one did stemming from the beautiful way Rebecca Ross writes. Best believe I will be reading all of her other books and any future ones she releases!
Some of my favorite quotes:
“I would love to see you burn with splendor. I would love to see your words catch fire with mine.”
“Should I be surprised that I was falling in love with you a second time? Should I be surprised that your words found me here, even in the darkness? That I’ve been carrying your E. letters close to my heart like they are a shield to protect me?”
“Sometimes,” Iris began, “I don’t think we know what we’re made of until the worst moment possible happens. Then we must decide who we truly are and what is most important to us. I think we’re often surprised by what we become.”
“You may not be a goddess, but nor am I a god. Despite our mundane lives, perhaps we make our own magic with words.”
“How I love to lose to you. How I love to read your words and hear the thoughts that sharpen your mind. And how I would love to be on my knees before you now, surrendering to you and you alone.”
“And he thought, There is no magic above or below that will ever steal this from me again.”
“Oh, I would betray you a hundredfold,” he said, his voice rising. “I would betray you a thousandfold for her.”
“do we live by our past, or do we live by what is to come? Do we choose to waste time looking behind to things that have already happened and cannot be changed, or do we keep our sight forward on what we can see?”

loved Willa in this one! No filter & fiery personality - she exudes confidence but is a little insecure on the inside - something cade has no problem helping her with

I really enjoyed this book! I liked the dynamic between Ava/Alex and loved the touch her and d*e attitude from Alex as the story progressed. I do feel like the shift between enemies to lovers lacked a little bit of context (it seemed very sudden), but i'm not mad at it. I did NOT expect this book to be so twisty and I was LIVING for it! I love when romances catch me off guard and this one definitely did that! The spice was SPICY

Let me start by saying that I don't typically like royal settings - bridgerton and contemporary queens - just not for me. However, this one was done SO well! I loved our multi-faceted queen Bridget and her overprotective bodyguard, Rhys, had me swooning. This one is a bit of a slower burn than in Twisted Love, but I wasn't mad at it! I feel like a lot of reviews on twisted love said that the shift from enemies to lovers was too abrupt and I think Ana Huang did a much better job of giving us context. This book covers a LOT of time in a short amount of pages, but I was never confused where we were in the story and I think the pacing was done perfectly - any shorter and it would have been too quick (twisted love issue) and any longer it would have dragged on. And I do want to mention, while I did like Twisted Love better overall, Rhys Larsen beats out Alex Volkov for me

This was by far my favorite of the series so far! I absolutely loved the dynamic between Jasper and Sloane. They are both such complex characters and I loved how much emphasis was placed on their backstory before getting into them as a couple. They really complemented each other and brought out the best in the other. Very much "you've always been it for me" vibes throughout the whole thing - which did get slightly repetitive but it made sense. I liked that there was a bit of angst/getting to know each other/ relationship development between them even though they've known each other for years bc they spent so much time apart (so it was necessary). I've got Theo and Beau left and idk how they're gonna top Jasper, but I do have high hopes for Beau haha. Excited to continue the series and read everything else Elsie Silver writes!
Some of my favorite quotes:
“For too long, I was a soft, demure little dove. And then they burned me. Scorched me. Turns out I’m a dragon and I’m fed the fuck up with boys and their bullshit.”
"God. You’ve loved me when I haven’t even been able to love myself.”
“I’m going to get comfortable disappointing other people to avoid disappointing myself.”
"I also know you need to be the one to put yourself back together. If it’s me, I’ll constantly be the one mending you when you break. Pulling you back from that ledge. And I can’t be responsible for that for the rest of our lives. That needs to come from you.”
Everyone talks about women being too emotional. Too hormonal. I’m inclined to think men are the problem. Us women would be just fine without all of you fucking us up.”
“That’s not how feelings work—they just are, no matter what anyone else thinks of them.”
“Because we’re me and you. We’re us. Unlikely and inevitable all at once. We’re forever.”

I'll be honest for the first part of this book it was sitting at a solid 3.25 for me, but it SHOT UP when i got to the last third! To be fair though, I'm not typically a dark romance girly, so this is probably my threshold for how dark I can go without being slightly triggered haha. Imo, it sits just before the line of being too much - but I did enjoy it! After hook did his hook thing and stopped being crazy is when I really got into it. Wendy's naivety did slightly annoy me, but it wasn't enough to make me stop reading. There were plot twists on plot twists at the end which I LOVED. Overall, if you're a fan of a lot of spice, dark romance, villains, and overbearing men then you will probably really enjoy this book! I will likely continue the rest of the series, but I will probably spread them out and read them as palate cleansers in between my typical fluffy romances and fantasy reads haha.
p.s. i HATED the nickname "pet" - if anyone ever says that to me, im going off

I knew this one was going to be my favorite in the series just from the little glimpses we got of Jules and Josh in the previous two books. I loved their enemies to lovers arc, the banter, and the relationship they built together. Jules is THAT mother trucking B****! I absolutely loved her character and the way she carried herself throughout most situations - except the one with max,, I was literally SCREAMING! there were so many other options than the one she chose haha. I hated the way Josh treated her at a few certain parts, but he really turned it around in the end. & the BOOKSTORE SCAVENGER HUNT????? you HAVE to be kidding me!!!

It was so nice to be back in the world of carval even if it was just for a short time. I loved this one and I am so happy it was primarily focused around Tella (spoiler alert - she was always my favorite :')). This one is such a short read, but so worth it! A perfect read for the christmas holiday :)

okay this definitely read like this was the author's debut novel - there were a few plot holes/inconsistencies and typos but I didn't mind. The beginning was a little slow and had some technical language because the fmc was a scientist. I pushed through though and am so glad i did! i liked the overall storyline and am excited to see how book 2 plays out. i was not expecting the plot twists at the end AT ALL and i think she did a great job with the trope. overall would recommend if you're a fan of enemies to lovers (with a quick flip from one to the other), villainous mmc's, dark fantasy, touch her and d*e, death trials.
p.s. i still hate the nickname "pet" but it was a tad less unbearable in this one than the last one i read with that nickname
