I wanted to enjoy this book slightly more than I did. It drew me in and was un-put-down-able, but more in the way a sketchy reality TV show is. The characters were vibrant and life-like, and while there were definitely some I rooted for, there were some that I was... less enamoured with, which is still strong characterization. I was hoping to find it a little less romance-y, but really, no major compalints. I think that it was simply not quite to my personal tastes.

Having read some books that weren't quite worth the hype (looking at you, TFioS), I think I went into this book with relatively low expectations. I knew that Lord of the Rings has an almost cult-like following, and is a franchise that ranks among Star Wars and Harry Potter in terms of popularity. And, in all honesty, THIS is a book that lives up to the hype.
Tolkien's writing is drawn out and meandering, and it goes nowhere quickly. However, I feel like it pairs well with a story like this, as his style creates lush descriptions and impressive worldbuilding without really distracting the plot.
The plot is pretty slow throughout and even leaves you wondering why some parts were included, but it picks up at the end and everything is tied together nicely. All of Checkov's guns go off.
My only real complaint with the book is the lack of characterization for some of the side characters. While I understand that the main cast is very large, It feels like we only ever got to know three or four main characters and a bunch from one-off scenes.

I've been waiting for this book since it was released, and it beat all my expectations. The only reason I deducted a point is that the action sequence just before the end lost me- though that could be my own fault. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This was a very interesting read! I thought the layout and style was unique, and I appreciated the layered take on everything. Its main detraction was that it seemed a little wordy, and it left me with more questions than answers... which isn't necessarily a bad thing. ;)

This book was dense but informative. I appreciate the puzzle included and the tips and tricks outlined throughout, intentional or not.

I mean, I understand why this book is a classic, but at the same time, there's just not that much to it. It reads like a giant run-on sentence, meandering from idea to idea without really going anywhere. That's not to say that it's a bad book; just not really to my tastes.
