As light a narrative as the fabric that it uses as a metaphor, this is a summer breeze of a read. It demands nothing, even as it captivates you into its narrative. It is not, however, a finished book. If anything, a sketch - and perhaps that's exactly what it wants to be.
Gallimard's audio edition, with Jacques Bonnaffé's casual reading and the occasional use of a little flute interlude, does this book justice in presenting its tone and character.

Germans have some of the most engaging children's books, and this one is no exception. Not least of which for including Heinrich Heisters' beautiful illustrations. Also great to practice the Präteritum tense if, like me, you're learning the language.

I've probably had this book since I was 13, but only got around to reading it now. It took me straight away to my late childhood, how I felt and sensed the world, and how the world was back then (80's and 90's). Pity some stories are a bit too Jesus-y for comfort, but otherwise a good read.

One of the absolute favourite classics from my (very early) childhood.
