I really don’t know what happened here. On paper, this should get a much higher rating from me, but oh my god, this was such a slog. It took me over 2 months to finish, I did not care for the characters at all, I did not care about the petty greed for fame and glory, and their relationship fell completely flat for me. I am upset.

This novel came to me at the perfect time. I started reading it on my flight back from Scotland. I had enjoyed Glasgow immensely and wanted to find out more about the city‘s fascinating history. The story was absolutely perfect, a fascinating insight into the downfall of the working class, a far less liberal not so distant past and the tender hearts of two boys. The memories of my trip will be forever interwoven with reading this book, making it even more special.
