Did not finish book.
Dnf for the 2nd time at 19% i tried REALLY hard to push through (i even switched to audiobook) but i just couldn't care for Ruying or that prince whatever his name was. i felt like most of what i read consisted of just Ruying's inner monologues... they could be published as a whole book

The writing style was repetitive and unnecessarily dramatic like she literally mentions every 5 pages how she would do anything for her family, how the romans invaded erlang, the cruelty of the romans, and the fate of erlang blah blah blah WE GET IT

an interesting concept but a poor execution.

I was so hyped for this, but as the pages went on, it just kept disappointing. It had so much wasted potential. It's basically a clutter of tropes, underwhelming romance, and predictable plot points.

okay moving on, let's talk abt the mirror people. the mirror ppl's indignation was justified and the way she just sealed them again just like that left a bad taste in my mouth. it was unsatisfying. when Mei Po said "remember who the monsters are" or smth along the lines of it and the mentions of the mirror ppl being like that was because of imitating the humans actions all those years, i thought Ying would figure out that sealing them again is no worse than what the mirror ppl did / plan to do + that phrase played a huge part in marketing the book and i thought it would mean SOMETHING but nope. Ying and her love interest (i forgot his name) acted just as bad as the guy who condemned the mirror people to imitate humans, which was disappointing because i thought Ying was better than that and would sympathize with the mirror ppl. i dont get how we're supposed to see the mirror ppl as the villains when they learned their viciousness by years of imitating humans.
