The Spite House by Johnny Compton

I love a good haunted house story and The Spite House does not disappoint. The title gives you a good idea of what feeds the spirits in this skinny house.

I throughly enjoyed the characters in this novel. Johnny Compton did an amazing job building them out and letting the reader connect to each of them. Dess and Millie became my favorites.

The setting was thoughtful described and vibrant without being overworked. I could easily place myself in the floating hallway of the spite house.

The pace was good for me. I see a lot of folks saying it was slow. Yea it was in some parts but I felt it added suspense. By the last quarter of the book I was flying through the pages to find out what happens.

This was a fantastic debut by Johnny Compton. Make sure you keep him on your radar.

I want to say thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan-Tore/Forge for a digital ARC.

Really enjoyed the premise but I kept getting distracted and lost in the timeline. The story and character building was top notch!

This fucking book. Fuck this book. I can’t wait to re-read it. It was so good. I was hooked by the 4th chapter. CJ Leede is someone to lookout for if you love horror leaning towards the more extreme side.

Just finished the book and WOW! I don't know how to describe my feelings. It, sadly, felt familiar and too close to home. Being a queer non-binary person from Texas I can feel the eyes of the townsfolk starting at me through the page. The writing style is completely unique. I have never read anything like it. It was as if I was watching the words from 500 feet in the air getting descriptions that were generic and vague but at the same time I was looking through the eyes of the characters and the descriptions were too vivid. I really enjoyed the experience reading the book. Excited to see what the author comes out with next!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Nat fucking Cassidy did it again folks. Nestlings was nothing like I expected it to be but turns out it was everything I needed it to be. The way Nat can capture the core of characters like Ana (previously Mary too) is impressive. He really puts you in their heads and you see all the ugly pretty scary gross things that come with it.

As much as I love Ana and Reid (kinda), the Deptford is the star of the show. I don’t want to spoil it but iykyk.

Great job all around. Now I have to wait till October for my pre-ordered physical copy!

Thanks Net Galley and Tor Nightfire for the Arc!
Everything the Darkness Eats by Eric LaRocca

So, I just finished Everything the Darkness Eats by Eric LaRocca, and let me tell you, it's one hell of a ride! The book is seriously good and the writing is top-notch. My only gripe? I wish it was like 100 pages longer, man. There were some things that I wanted to see explored more, ya know?

But let's talk about the characters. Ghost (and his ghost), dude, they were amazing! LaRocca totally nailed their development, making them feel so real and fleshed out. They were the heart and soul of the story, and I couldn't get enough of their journey.

Now, here's the juicy part. The religious undertones in this book were wickedly evil. It added this twisted layer to the story that I absolutely loved. The whole thing was dark and grim, but there were these moments of light and connection that kept me going.

Okay, I gotta warn you, though. This book gets pretty violent. But hey, the author didn't go overboard with the gory details, so it's still totally readable. Just make sure to check those trigger warnings before diving in, alright?

All in all, Everything the Darkness Eats is a gripping read that left me hungry for more. I wish it had more pages to explore all the cool stuff, but it's still a damn good book. So, if you're into dark tales with well-developed characters and a touch of evil, give it a shot. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
