Fear the Flames by Olivia Rose Darling

I absolutely LOVE this book. I was an ARC reader for FtF when it was indie published, I was lucky enough to receive an ARC for the trad published version, and now I’ve listened to the audiobook version. I truly will never ever recover from how much I adore the world that Olivia has created. From the dragon princess in hiding seeking revenge while also maintaining a kind heart to the ruthless yet obsessed commander, there’s not a single character or moment in this story that doesn’t make me absolutely feral. It has delicious spice, quippy banter, loveable side characters, gripping action, and so many quotable moments. When I read FtF back in 2022, I was floored by this absolutely perfect story and yet Olivia has somehow made it even better in this version. I am thrilled. I cannot wait for Wrath of the Dragons!

🎧 Fear the Flames is already a highly bingeable story but with this beautifully narrated audiobook, I swallowed it whole in two days (easily could have been quicker if I could have listened and nothing more). The pure emotions came through so beautifully with this performance and made me fall in love with the story all over again.

I RECOMMEND IF:
If badass female main characters, dragons, and epic romantasy is your jam, Fear the Flames will knock your socks off.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
• Forced proximity
• Hurt/comfort
• Loveable side characters
• Caffeine addicted, stabby heroine
• Ruthless to everyone but you MMC
• Spice: 🌶️🌶️.5  (several moderately graphic on page scenes)
• CW/TW: ouchie sessions, on page violent ☠️, & mentions of past threats of SA (brief, but there) — check full list before reading
Unromance by Erin Connor

Unromance is exactly the kind of quick paced rom-com that I adore reading. Sawyer is a work-a-holic romance author and chronically unattached while Mason is a hopeless romantic actor who is always falling in love. Their meet cute and repeated run ins had me kicking my feet and squealing with joy and their subsequent arrangement had me cackling gleefully. I had the best time reading their story. Time after time, whenever I thought they couldn’t get any cuter or funnier, something would happen to have me squawk laughing out loud. I loved the little references to Taylor Swift and Bridgerton and I am *convinced* Mason was the McDreamy of his medical drama show. The “Unromance” list they created was bound to fail and I truly had the best time reading how it unraveled. Trust me, you’ll laugh at the banter, blush at the spice, and weep from joy at the sweetness (at least I did all of these things). I LOVED IT SO MUCH! Literally all the stars, no notes.

🎧 The audiobook performance was dual narration & was very enjoyable. The emotion captured throughout had me fully invested.

I RECOMMEND IF:
If you like romantic comedies that will make you cackle out loud and then weep how much you love love, then Unromance is the book for you.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
• Hopeless romantic actor & jaded romance author
• Funny (and mostly subtle) pop culture references
• Bi FMC
• Golden retriever MMC
• Ruining romance, one cliche at a time
• Meet cute turned one night stand turned more
• IKEA is a nightmare
• Inspiration for book, one trope at a time
• Baggage from previous relationships
• Laugh out loud banter
• Overly enthusiastic & supportive friends
• Spice: 🌶️🌶️.5 (a few on page scenes, moderately graphic)
Babylonia by Costanza Casati

Did not finish book. Stopped at 20%.
I listened to an ALC of Babylonia.

Unfortunately, I DNFed the audiobook at 20%. The performance of the book was elegant and enjoyable. There were no dramatic voice differences for characters, which does avoid the cringe potential but also made it harder to distinguish characters. I really enjoyed the narrators accent, which was the main reason I listened for as long as I did. However, while the book was beautifully narrated, I was not invested enough in the characters or the story at 20% to desire to continue to the end of the book. I found my mind wandering while listening and was not invested enough to stop and re-play parts I missed.

I believe there are readers out there who will find the writing style and storytelling to their liking, but it was not for me.
Foreseen Fate by Katherine St. Vincent

Forseen Fate was not at all what I was anticipating, and I do think the expectations I had that were not met were partly my own fault. I thought this was going to be an omegaverse romance between the MCs, not a book with omegaverse vampires that the MCs serve. This threw me off and made me question how there could be or why there should be more than one form of “fated partner” in one universe. It was messy to me, but perhaps I wouldn’t have felt that way if I hadn’t misunderstood what the story was about.

However, one element that I did not enjoy that was not a misunderstanding was all the prayers and thoughts about their “dark one” god. I am not a religious person and I did not enjoy how much the internal dialogue centered around how devout they were in their secret society, cult religion. It did not interest me and I personally felt it became a bit repetitive after a while. The visions were a bit creepy and I’m at a loss as to how the magic works.

All that being said, I did enjoy several things including how the MCs stood up to the cult leaders, the spice scenes between the MCs, the age gap element, the pace of their relationship, the way it was giving “sexy cult priest” vibes, and how the vampire lord was fully a supporter of the MCs. These are the parts of the story that kept me from DNFing the book.

If you like a story that has a secret society cult where “priest” figures have visions, dealing with religious trauma-like elements, has vampires (not the MCs), and you like a fated partners trope then this might be for you. The story was well written and I’m sure it will be compelling to some other readers, but it was not for me. I probably will not continue on with future books in this series either.
