We follow the lives of a few people living in Black Conch. The story is mostly told through the journals of David Baptiste an island fisherman who finds Aycayia one day and meets her whenever they can out at sea.
But Aycayia is different. She's a mermaid.
She learns to listen for the sound of David's boat, but one day is caught by some touring fishermen. They string her up on the islands jetty and boast about their catch.
What comes afterwards is a story so beautiful that I was moved to tears often. The characters in this book truly come alive and I loved them all so much. Aycayia's story is harrowing and the relationships she manages to build feel so special. I just didn't want this story to end. The writing is stunning - so lyrical and the dialogue is just perfection!
