I hadn't actually heard about this book until someone RT’d the trailer for the movie on my twitter and I was instantly intrigued I then ordered the book straight away and upon its arrival read it in about 2 days. The book was captivating and in many respects beautiful. Being someone around the ages of the characters always allows a book to really hit home with me, thus I could relate and see both myself and my friends in the characters. I feel the book took a little bit of a slow start but then it really started to get going. There was a lot of small little twists in the book that I didn't expect, but this made it very interesting and made for a deeper plot that what I had originally expected. I was also a huge fan of the ending, even though it wasn't exactly solid which is what I usually prefer, I liked how it was left really open and almost for the reader to interpret how they like. The fact that the chapters were pretty short kept me reading more and more as I would often go “just one more chapter” then realise how short it had been and read another 4 or 5. I find it hard to fault this book, it was exactly what I expected and I am really excited to see the movie.
Having seen both the movie and a theatre performance of Lord of the Flies I knew what to expect. This meant I wasn’t shocked to find young boys loosing their grasp on humanity after being deserted on an Island but there was something alarming about reading these events happening from the perspective a young boys mind. The writing style used is phenomenal and Golding gets right into the mind of how I would imagine these children would be feeling. It is almost heart breaking to read as these young children turn into complete savages killing off their own as they lose hope of ever being rescued. At some points I did feel like the story was dragging and much the same things were happening over and over again but this might have been because I knew the pivotal moments that were coming up and I kept thinking when are these moments going to happen. I found this a chilling but fantastic read, definitely one of my favourites.
