Despite the immaculate writing, I was ready to give this book 3.5 stars right up to the last couple of pages especially because I couldn’t find it in me to like either of the main characters. But, in a way that almost never happens, the author spun me around at the last minute giving what was a devastatingly sad book, a perfect redeeming ending. I’ve got to admit it was masterful.
I really like Peter May’s writing. His ability to describe the Scottish landscape is compelling. But I have previously felt a bit disappointed by his characters and by the somewhat implausible final plot twists. But this book was spot on. The characters are beautifully and credibly crafted and the ‘murder’ aspect is such a minor part of the plot as to be simply the vehicle but not the major driver. A really good quality read!
Haruki - I think you either love him or hate him. I was hooked the day I read my first Murakami (The Wind Up Bird Chronicle) and I’ve probably read everything he’s written. This is a mellow and very romantic book. I felt as if I had moved into the house on the the hill alongside the main character. The writing has a repetitive quality that is almost hypnotic although there are also moments of magnificently portrayed tension. Don’t read it if you want action. But, yes, if you want to slip into that elusive crevice where belief is suspended and anything might happen.
