witchbuns's Reviews (231)

If this had stronger cover art I think it would be a hit. The setting of two British actors doing a Regency period movie and resisting their chemistry, plus flashing forward to Cynthie recovering from a secret trauma (and gulp, learning to trust Jack) — all that was just fun, well-paced, and a good time rom com. The behind the scenes movie making and found family was really delightful. Overall not a full four stars because I wouldn’t re-read this, but I would recommend it to so many friends.

I want to see what the next book will be, I assume with his sister Lee, and book four with Hannah? I will definitely read, and I’m going to read the first book (definitely not essential to jumping in with this one).

Pretty big miscommunication again in this one but I did appreciate all the capers that Rune did and we saw her as a spy and renegade. Overall fun but very YA novel.

I wanted the book to have started earlier in the story to see the Crimson Moth being such a strong assassin and maybe cut some of  the middle back and forth with Gideon. I was disappointed that we didn’t get to see her being brave and stealthy. What we see is her failing to seduce Gideon and immediately running after a false lead. I also wanted more of the backstory with Verity and more scenes of their friendship. That said, I’m immediately running to the next book so clearly I’m all in.

LOVED this. Ember is so strong and she doesn’t hide from expressing her anger as she tries to rip through systemic barriers and build her own future. Dan was a heartthrob and there were so many moments of chemistry and truly caring for one another. Bravo. Can’t wait to read the upcoming release by this author.

Very fun world, more of the cozy magic, but I was less invested in this one because the romance needed more of a slow burn and once they were together there wasn’t much mention of any sweet moments to keep you invested. Really loved the supporting characters though and the descriptions of magic are lovely.

Great chemistry between the leads but he failed her three times and that third act breakup was irredeemable. She never should have gone back to him and it made no sense that he didn’t value her at that point in the story. Fun side characters but horrible men.

Really loved the setting in Alberta and the premise of the FMC diving into tree planting. I really want to read other stories from this author. I didn’t rate it 4 stars or above because I wanted more time planting (and slow down the romance to a slower burn) with more time on other friendships made and developing the relationship with her cousin outside of the men they were dating. Once the romance took off it was very primary and I personally just wanted more of the tree planting story with more side characters. But hey, that’s just me. Very cool idea for a book though and I’ll definitely recommend.

Was going to DNF because the FMC was not compelling to me and she starts off so disagreeable and focused on a high school kiss. I needed more time with her to see her personality and to root for her. I kept with the book because I wanted to see how the author evolved Mace, because he gets the most development (does the FMC actually grow? And why can’t I even remember her name thirty minutes later). Overall not a laid back read and not for me, but glad to have read a Canadian author and I do wonder about her other books. This one really hooked me on the premise but not the plotting.

Not my favourite but this author is still engaging and I’ll continue through her stories. The love story at the  end happens quite suddenly and I wanted a slow burn. Then when
she starts trying to understand the infidelity and meets with Beatrice I was cringing, let it go. On the other hand, I don’t know what it’s like to be in a ten year relationship with suspected cheating, so, fair. But for her to blame Matt for not telling her what he knew, when his backstory has a central plot point that telling on his Uncle made him lose his family? And then for that not to be examined as a reason he was reticent to confront her? I was confused.
I ended up speed reading the last 1/8th the book because I was disappointed in the plotting. I also felt Matt as love interest really deserved better from everyone, especially the FMC.
I am still reading all the  author’s catalogue because I loved About Last Night, which was my first one.

Not the strongest Lynn Painter because I think she lost me at “millionaire” as the main character trait of the MMC. The idea that Abi was his maid was very uncomfortable throughout, despite the discussion on class being a recurring topic. I also never understood the first chapter: that Abi would bake muffins in a client’s apartment and spend the night - she seemed too controlled in the rest of the novel to do something so reckless. I wish Abi had never been a maid in the setup and they met in a different means. HOWEVER - it must be said that I will read anything by Lynn Painter and even if this was not a favourite, I still love her books and they will be a must read that I reserve from the library as soon as possible. I love that her heroines are mouthy and smart and driven, I love the commitment to Omaha as a setting, and she’s just a lot of fun. Until the next one!
