Tim Probert’s illustrations are always so incredibly detailed, it really makes this series stand out from other middle grade fantasy graphic novel series.

Upon hearing Simon James Green writing about Section 28, I was excited, yet scared. I wasn’t used to SJG’s writing style without there being a lot of comedy involved, and I am so glad it’s still present in this book and it shines through with something so damaging and heartbreaking. I loved the breaking of the fourth wall despite it taking some time to get used to, and still found myself laughing out loud like most SJG novels. It is an important topic which has come up again very recently in school libraries in America and it’s a shame Rob was right and history does never learn. There has been a lot of progress but also a few steps back too. A brilliant book that should be featured in all school libraries across the UK (and hopefully America).

Having followed some of Katy Wix’s work (Horrible Histories and Ghosts), I couldn’t wait to read this. It’s such a clever way to talk about grief and I laughed at a lot of the stories and felt seen by some of the relationships mentioned that it felt like I was also processing my own feelings alongside Katy. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Katy talk about this and feel lucky to have experienced this memoir.

I went into this book expecting it to be challenging to read as I don’t read much historical fiction, but boy was I wrong. It is so easily accessible and you grow attached to the characters so fast that when things start to happen, you feel your heart break over and over again. It is an incredible piece of literature spanning over 4 generations of one family, which is also what adds to its charm being so exceptional. The detail to historical accuracy is also top notch. I am so glad I did decide to read this and I know those characters will stay with me forever.
