This book was a rollercoaster. I had no trouble getting into the story as I love being thrust into the middle of the events and figuring out what exactly is going on. The representation of India through the kingdom of Ravence is done so beautifully and magically that it makes me see everything around me in a new light and perspective (so far as to make me want to wear a lehenga to my college just to be badass like Elena). I hadn't read the Boy with fire or even heard much about it but as soon as I saw the author's promotions for The Phoenix King I knew I had to give it a try because even though normally I'm iffy about a book whose promotions I mainly see done by the author I'm glad I gave this one a chance.
Aparna Verma's writing style and the way she entraps you with her words in the story is phenomenal. As an aspiring author myself I take great inspiration from this book and it's writing. It took me quite a while to finish this book because of the long chapters and the tiny font but I also got to stretch it out because I didn't want the story to end.
The characters are so well written and interesting in the sense we know that nobody in this book is hundred percent good or bad. They're just humans going through life and grief. Joy and death. They make you want to know them more and understand their motives. The twist at the end was something that had my jaw dropping in an amazing kind of a way.
The best thing I loved about this book was the number of mentions about food in it. Like pav bhaji, jalebi, aloo chat. It makes you hungry both for actual food and the story.
I cannot wait for the next two books to come out, and I wish that this series gets the global recognition it deserves.
