this book was extremely well written and the way it weaves around past and future puts the fire in a cultural context. there was the loss of material in the fire, but also the impact of losing a library space is much more massive than one originally thinks. as someone who works in a library i found myself so engrossed in this story. it felt like i was really seen. i highly recommend this book for library workers and for anyone who wonders why the library is so deeply important

novellas give me little time to get truly invested in the characters but i’m really intrigued by this plot. i’m going to read a couple more in this series and see what i think

classics are sometimes classics because they were revolutionary at the time but modern readings sometimes fall flat. i enjoyed this and i appreciate the influence this had on modern thrillers/horror but in 2023 it was simply alright

do not read this book. i ended up reading it because of a silly joke and wasted over a year of my life slogging through it. it’s not bad enough to be funny or at all enjoyable

i liked blake crouch’s other books, but all plot was completely lost on me because i didn’t care at all about the main character. he was a completely flat who i found completely impossible to care for.

I listened to this, which is how I'd recommend it and I found it an exceptionally quick and engaging read. It was fun.
