I got this book simply because I LOVED Divergent as a kid, and I just had to read Veronica Roth's adult debut! I will say that one of the only drawbacks to this book is that it still read like a YA book most of the time. The characters were in their late 20s/early 30s but still felt like characters who were in their early 20s or even younger.
With that aside, I really loved this book! Sloane was such a great character. She was strong, angry, unpredictable and didn't want to be a hero, but she WAS and she was real and honest every step of the way. The other characters also had so much depth and there were times when I loved them and other times where they were very unlikeable which I loved. They were well-rounded characters and I loved reading about all of them.
The pacing was spot on for the majority of the book, but at times it slowed a bit and felt like it was dragging. The writing style is amazing, and the world building was incredibly done. I will say that I loved the addition of government documents, articles, references and other works of writing in between the chapters. It kept me engaged and really added to the world-building. I am excited to see where this series goes, because honestly I don't even have the slightest idea what could happen!

I did enjoy this book after Part 1, but if this book wasn't by Veronica Roth, I don't think I would have stuck with it through Part 1. This book felt like it was very slow paced in Part 1 and felt like reading a long winded wrap up of a book I hadn't read before. I do think it was important to introduce the characters and their problems, but I just felt like some parts could have been cut down on to get to the action packed and main meat of the story.
As for the rest of the book, it was very enjoyable to read and the character arcs were well done. I think that all the characters showed development in themselves in their relationships as the story went on. I do think that the story is interesting enough to read the sequel to this book and I think that the second book will be a lot better than the first because there shouldn't be as much set up. Overall, a decent read, albeit a little slow in some places.

Meh. I don’t know what to think or say about this. It was interesting and good to me for maybe 75 pages about 2/3 of the way through, but otherwise I was a bit bored and didn’t know why I was bothering. The concept is a decent one, but not well executed.
I was excited about the premise of what happens to teenagers who save the world in dystopian fiction. And it being an adult novel? I happily waited six months to read this and it was garbage.
It started okay! I liked the main five characters in concept. Sloane is one of five chosen ones who saved the world from the Dark One and for some reason, she’s not surviving as well as the other four. She has PTSD and everyone expects her to move on, but she can’t. Two of the four embraced their new fame in being active in the community and social media. One lives a quiet life. Another is struggling with addiction. On the ten year anniversary of the defeat, one of the five passes away suddenly and the story begins.
Anyway, my personal thought is that the author wrote this like she was starting at chapter 10 and hoping we’d catch up. I kept reading it and thinking, “I feel like I’m missing something that would help this make sense.” If Veronica Roth had spent more time developing the alternate universe she created out of nowhere instead of waxing poetic about how much she knows about Chicago, my review would probably be different.
The main characters were intended to be in their late twenties and spoke like teenagers but occasionally said curse words. Sloane regularly said things that I’m sure Roth thought were total zingers that made me want to scream. And don’t get me started about the character that was the love interest... because we should be glorifying abuse.
All I will say is this: I never read Divergent as a teenager but I won’t be going back to read it now.

It took me over a year to finish this book, but I’m so glad I did! I found myself losing interest towards the middle; things just got really slow and I couldn’t really see the story going anywhere. But I pushed forward! This was a really great, interesting read. Strong characters, interesting plot points and twists, and a string protagonist that isn’t particularly loveable but very intriguing.
As always, I love Roth’s writing. Chosen Ones was slow at some moments and some parts felt underdeveloped and rushed at the end, but overall, the book is still a good read.

Bra men blev lite besviken. Väldigt platt.
As a book I read during quarantine wanting to escape from a grim reality, it did its job. It's probably not the best written or the most original book I've ever read, but I still liked it a lot and will be reading the continuation. I liked the characters, even if they were a little bit stereotypical at times. I wasn't really surprised by the plot, but it still was interesting to read. It was a pretty enjoyable read and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to escape reality a little.
(It was really good on how it described trauma though. That was a good surprise, that part was very clever and layered.)
