the rare trilogy where i liked the third one best! often fantasy series peter out midway thru and i only finish out of completionism. but i really liked how much Tamras grew, and how her voice matured without changing into a totally different character.

“Your task will be to let your heart grow large enough not to break.”

RE-READ 2022. When I started my reread, I glanced at my first review and was disappointed to see that I'd only written one sentence. I love looking back to see what I thought of books in the past; it's why I try to write a review for every book I read, even if it's just one paragraph. Now that I've completed my reread, I understand why past Laura only had one sentence in her. I loved this so much. SO SO MUCH. It's no wonder I had trouble putting it into words. Yesterday when I finished the first book, I understood why it affected me so much in the past, even if it didn't quite get me in the same way in the present. But this? This is just as much of an emotional gut punch as it was when I first read it.

The writing is terrifically simple, but sometimes it just reaches off the page and slaps me in the face. There aren't a lot of frills to this coming of age, coming into power, adventure and love story, but it's told so honestly and beautifully it truly just makes me want to cry. I love Tamras and Maara with my whole, whole heart. The deepening of their relationship, the way Wilson takes her time with it, never neglecting other bonds and ties that they have, but showing how they circle each other slowly and irrevocably before coming to the same point? It's just so good. In every line of this book, there's something about the way strength and tenderness are juxtaposed that means so much to me. It priorities women and relationships between women without getting essentialist about it; talks about motherhood as something beautiful, but not universally desirable. So much about this was perfect to me and for me. Ever get the zoomies from a book? Like, you read a line and you just need to put the book down and walk around your living room? Yeah. That was me, several times while reading this.

I'm mad at myself that it took me so long to reread this series, and I'm also terrified because the third book is the only one I haven't read and I'm scared for it to end. I'm still going to start it immediately. I can't do anything but that. I adore these characters, and right now, all I want to do is spend more time with them.

I felt no fear. No harm will come to me, not like this, not when love asks the question.

I'm too emotional to write a proper review but this series continues to be perfect and everything I want out of life and fiction.

Though all the world believes that the good of many souls must tip the balance, there is a flaw in their reckoning, for the value of the soul cannot be weighed or measured but by love. If my heart held the scales, I knew which side would fall.

My heart is too small. I was scared to read this because I was worried it wouldn't live up to how much I loved the previous two books, but I need not have been afraid. I loved this so much. I loved it in the specific kind of way that makes it difficult for me to talk about it. Tamras goes on this amazing journey, both in terms of adventure, personal growth, and her love. It's so beautiful to read. That is probably the most striking thing about the series to me. Wilson writes in an extremely simple way, never flowery, never purple, but every sentence is lovely, even when she is being bald and economical. My heart hurts with how much I loved this. This series has given me so much already, by prioritising all kinds of different relationships between women, and this book had to top it all off by including one of my all-time favourite tropes. Or I don't know if you would call it a trope. But let's just say that Tamras makes certain decisions that are agonising and perfect. I love love like that. I love reading about it and I love witnessing it. She and Maara just make my heart bloom. It's painful and beautiful, all the lessons that have to be learned. All of the different plot threads and side stories were wrapped up in a really great way and I'm just so happy with everything.

If I have one quibble it's that I would have liked for there to have been more stories within the story, in the vein that there were in the first book. My kingdom to have just one more story about the ancient days when only women were warriors. The stories and fantastical elements are some of the best things about this series. I did appreciate that we got stories from other cultures, but I did miss the original ones. Other than that? Perfect. I am so happy to be able to end off my year with a solid five star and a new favourite.

I would love my life for as long as Maara lived. More than that no one could demand of me, not even my own gods.

I am absolutely devastated that this series has to end. It was so well written and I love it so much. I couldn't put it down.

I just couldn't stop reading this entire series was amazing. Odds are if you're looking into the second book you've read the first and if you haven't read the first book pick up the entire series today. It's a great world and a great story and it is beautifully written.

ofc, i had to read the second part... idk what to say. it's just a good read. it feels like therapy, somehow lol even tho they're literally in ancient times. book two had a bigger plot in the second half after the cozy vibes so it was a bit jarring but hey my ship is finally sailing i am most definitely finishing the third book.
